I bet if I went outside half naked on a unicycle juggling chainsaws, only a handful of people here would notice. Since day one, the whole it's-cool-to-ignore-everything thing has annoyed me, and in the last month or so I've felt quite hostile toward living here. One more month to go and it's sayonara!

What I don't understand is how so many foreigners put up with it here just fine. To be frank, I have to think some people are either too oblivious or too stupid to notice when they've been wronged. Honestly, I'm surprised I don't see more foreigners getting pissed off over here. I guess once people realize they don't like it here, they leave and rarely post on sites like this anymore. The one thing I'll add is that I don't think it's a "travel" thing as others have put it. It's an East Asian thing. It seems like some folks don't know the difference. I bet you'd get along much better most other places in the world.

In short, the OP is totally normal. I don't know what's up with all the cheesy overly tolerant softies here.

I always found it strange with martial arts how aggressive people say that it helped them release all their steam at the gym and become calm in situations outside. For me it had the opposite effect but I was a very passive person before instead.

With driving here it doesn't bother me that much. I think I was well prepared for it. I had a lot of people telling me about how crazy and dangerous the drivers are here but I had a scooter for 2.5 years in Taiwan and people would do the stupidest things there. I couldn't believe it there sometimes. People are a little bit horn crazy here which I think is a good thing. It keeps people on their toes. In Taiwan didn't use their horn and there were so many scooters there car drivers would disregard them. I was pleasantly surprised here but still careful.

It's nice to know I'm normal and it helps knowing that others are doing the same things as me like walking to the next 7-11 if they see one a bit crowded, or avoiding certain places at certain times. But I do wish we didn't feel like we had to do that.

I wonder if that contributes to us drinking more. I'm not a big drinker, only once a week. But sometimes I feel the urge to have a few beers in my belly to tolerate walking around downtown area in the evening.

this country is fucked up, they will not change their ways of rudeness,
because they are apathetic, ignorant, passive aggressive, selfish, drunks,
and racist, against foriegners, they want to be westernized, but, still have old disbelieve thinking.

I have never seen a country who don't have a clue of who they are, they tend to copy other countries traditions and dont know how , to be kind, considerate, and to treat people with respect!!, Koreans don't have people skills, and act like a bunch of uncivilized animals.

Yes I agree, that, the moms let thesespoiled, over weight reatarded kids , do what they want, and are very rude, and inconsiderate to foriegners.

Korea needs to have a rule to teach the mom's ettiquette!!!

BTW what's up with these retards on the subway talking to themselvs, walking back and forth like rejects,
Message to the Korean familiies, "your kids are not perfect!!!

The OP is neither normal nor abnormal. Lots of people like small towns and calmer places. They enjoy stretching out, a quieter place to eat or drink, they wait until 2 weeks after a movie opens, etc. Lots of people like the hustle and bustle of the big city, a packed club, and a busy bar.

I think the terms are "introvert" and "extrovert" or something along those lines. I don't think its some magical cultural thing. I think it's one of those things that you kinda sort out in life, especially if you have both introverted and extroverted tendencies. Sooner or later one might win out.

If you aren't used to big cities and a crowded, busy lifestyle, a place like Seoul can certainly result in sensory overload. Don't forget, there are probably some people stuck in dinky small towns in Korea who have almost the exact opposite of your problem- Too many friendly people who request their attention, lack of excitement, boring streets, no nightlife, etc.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

not necessarily. many martial arts practitioners [my husband, best friend, and their team(s)] wouldnt use their skills off the mat unless they absolutely had to. my husband is a brown belt in bjj (read: has been training for years) and hes never thrown down outside the gym. my best friend is a blue belt, and shes only had to defend herself once.

I second this. OP the purpose of a martial art is to help you focus your mind, body, and soul. While Muay thai is an excellent way to get in shape and release steam, it also is an aggressive martial art. I suggest a martial art that has traditional meditating imbedded in its core such as tai chi or Karate. Both involve a high level of meditating and finding yourself within while promoting self control and discipline. Ive trained for 15 years in 6 martial arts and gotta say i was just like you my first couple of years. that self control and relaxation comfort zone takes a while to get to! I also recommend going outside, go climb a mountain and when you get to the top find a secluded spot, close your eyes and just breathe in and out for a while. Hell if i have time il go with you, its always good to find a sparring partners too! Laughing

In seven years here, I can only recall a handful of instances where people have done something irritating to me. If somebody cuts you off in line, just push your way back in front of them. If you want to be more polite, say "제가 여기서 먼저 왔어요" or something like that. And if you live in a nicer area with more wealthy, educated people, such as Daechi-dong, Cheongdam-dong, Itaewon-dong (near the Hyatt), you'll encounter this behavior far less often. Having a car helps, too.

But really, having somebody be rude to you ain't nothing to get worked up about. Just do the same to them if you feel you must.

They are oblivious, I don'tthink they are stupid, but they are oblivious.

OP, the bottom line is you have realized what a lot of people that stay here for a long time never realize. You just aren't welcome here. Very few people in Korea could give a crap if you are uncomfortable here or if the day to day grind is bothering you. If you are upset about something then it means you want something to change, and as a foreigner you aren't here to change anything. You are either here because you like it as it is or you are no longer welcome. Even if your criticism is relevant and constructive, it is still criticism and therefore unwelcome. Living in a place or having a job where you are unable to give your personal input will leave anyone feeling frustrated and useless after a while. The minute you go out with your friends and talk about that guy that nailed you in the shoulder when you got on the subway you aren't going to be a victim, you are just going to be an ungrateful english teacher that can't hack it or a loser because you somehow can't make Korea work for you. Like most foreigners you are pretty much hopeless here and I think it's driving you crazy.

It doesn't mean you are bad or that Korea is bad, it just means it isn't a good fit for you. Japan might be a better place, who knows? If you enjoy ESL it isn't like you can't just leave Japan if it sucks for you too.

And as for the Martial Arts thing, I have noticed physical prowess doesn't really get anybody too far in Korea. The guys here are more into passive aggressive maneuvers and figuring out how to socially one up each other and dress well then they are about fighting and being athletic. There are gym rats, but they just don't seem to occupy the higher echelons of society. I guess what I'm saying is this isn't really the place where I would expect anyone to respect me for my fighting ability or athleticism. Unless we are talking about volleyball.

Libertarian and libertarian both mean neckbeard dork. That Steelrails subscribes to the philosophy is hardly surprising.

True libertarianism means to eff off, leave me alone, and let me do my own thing as long as I'm not hurting others. Mind your own business.

Because many are beta males who like taking it up the %^*&**. No, seriously, many here are here for a year or two, so they tend to put up with crap. It frustrates us long termers as bad behaviour needs to be corrected. If someone's rude to me, I let on like they're the ones who are stupid. I just don't put up with crap; but also it did take me two or three years here to get that way. Being in a different culture, at first, throws you out of your culture zone and makes the most confident person thrown off.

Couldn't it be that "some people are either too oblivious or too stupid" to realize that everyone has different experiences? And that one's personal experiences are not representative of the foreign population/teachers as a whole?

There are 20,000 plus foreign teachers here, yet one can go to any ESL in Korea website and there is only a relative handful of people complaining...certainly not thousands. Sure some may be oblivious and others stupid but most are probably doing okay.
