metalhead you suggested that I try China, but would I be able to find a job there given my education (BA - Philosophy, no TESL course, not an education major)? I am willing to work in China, but I always hear mixed things about the requirements.

Yeah you should be fine. One thing is that getting the good jobs in China usually requires being in China, but the same could be said about Korea. One thing with China though is that location is extremely important, this can be the difference between 'very good' and 'sheer hell'. I would avoid the big pricey cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou myself, and focus on cities in an affluent province like Jiansu Province, looking at Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi etc - modern cities with the traditional, lots of work, good foreigner scenes, close by bullet train to Shanghai if you really want the international Asian experience - I think Korea is bad for the following reasons:
- Shady bosses
- Xenophobia, including your boss/co-workers
- Rude students, really rude
Of course you might get lucky and have great Korean coworkers, even then, you will still be excluded from things. The Chinese are just more welcoming to foreigners.
That said, China can get grating too:
- Bad service. Seriously, compared to Korea the Chinese seem damn lazy
- Pollution can get bad, really bad (although with hwangsa so can Korea)
- Lots of variety in Chinese food, but you better like oily food. A lot. And lord only knows what is *really* in those cheap dumplings you bought
- Chinese peasants from the countryside. You really start to hate Chairman Mao for wiping out a lot of the intellectuals
I don't know, it depends what you want I guess, Korea is good for some things, but the rudeness and xenophobia wears a person down. It's easier as a foriegner to be happy in China I think. Unless you can find a good paying job in Thailand, that is even better of course.
But seriously, go public school at least if you are going to work in Korea, that's the best advice anyone can give you. |
