How can you take the Korea Times seriously when they print nonsense like this:

It's a regular column, too

http://koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/culture/2014/01/135_149085.html

I think that's the Korean equivalent of the horoscopes.

It's a little bit more sinister than the hororscopes. If you clicked on the two posted links you would see the author's attempts to get readers to visit local fortune tellers. For those with active brain cells there's no problem, but, there are some out there in ESL Land who are young, dumb, naive, and depressed enough to try anything and this is not the way they should turn. If they're lucky they'll only end up with an empty wallet.

It's something akin to a newspaper printing a column by a cult, like Mannam, encouraging readers to attend the free acting classes or gym classes. Didn't you ever wonder how anyone could fall for that trap? It all starts with "sweet, harmless lies", and, those people are so nice and understanding, and the next thing you know you're tossing flowers to the crowd on the lead float in the "Mannam May Day" parade at World Cup Stadium. See the point?

Meh, I see it as more of a fluff piece. Contrary to popular opinion, most Koreans don't instantly believe everything they read or are incapable of forming their own opinions. Those that believe in psychics and fortune tellers will read the article and have their opinions validated, those that don't won't even bother to read much of it. Those on the fence might try it out the way millions of people around the world randomly try a fortune teller or psychic.

Even if he is a mod, Koharski has always been a fair and balanced mod so it's not like Paddy is out there operating without any decent restraint, totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct.

Wait a minute. Patrick's a moderator? I'd heard he that he was before, and there was a thread where he openly said that he had been. But I've never heard it mentioned that he still is. Do you have any basis for this claim? Has he (or another mod) acknowledged or refuted this? Interesting development. Hmmm.

I know people who know him and he's told them he is Koharski. Another one of the mods is a long time member too but he hardly seems to be around these days.

Today the KT had pictures of severed Mexican heads on the front page. There's also a story about a man having sex with a dog. When they aren't publishing sex stories featuring filthy foreigners, they are beating the war drums of Korean nationalism, or blatantly plugging the various products that Samsung has managed to rip off from actual legitimate global companies. They also like to post articles that basically sl__-shame women ("Short Skirts Lead to Sexual Assault" etc). Did anyone ever think they were a serious news source? I always thought it was run by a couple of angry Korean flunkies from a one-room studio somewhere. I was actually shocked when I first saw a printed version of the KT.

agreed...it can't be just confirmation bias because when do they print stories about Korean teachers having sex with pupils? (of course this case involves a female so that does play into the story)

The Korean Times is a tabloid on the same level as the National Enquirer back home (if we look past the grammatical/spelling mistakes Smile )

I very much doubt most Koreans take it seriously let alone READ it.

To use it as any kind of yardstick is basically the same as using the N.E. back home as one.

Why? Were you an avid reader of the Enquirer in the past? Unless you were, that doesn't really add much to the discussion.

I do know that back in the day, the Weekly World News would have columns by Ed Anger that typically had reactionary, borderline xenophobic rants. Of course it was done in such a style that reactionaries would read it and laugh and say "I wish I could say that in public" and progressives would laugh at it the way they laugh at Steven Colbert. I mean these were articles that advocated dealing with greenhouse gases by releasing all the air in old tires simultaneously and having it "push" the smog out of the atmosphere. But behind it there was a vein of honest expression.

No I don't. I also don't remember where I said the KT was the SAME or IDENTICAL to the NE. I said it was on the same LEVEL as in it writes stories that are either blown way out of proportion or completely outlandish. However since I am not a reader of the NE (other than glancing at the headlines while waiting in the checkout counter) you might be able to show me where in the bolded statement above I was wrong.

I can't even believe you (SR) would mention Weekly World News...How are stories about Big Foot and Bill Clinton having an alien baby comparable to one of the only two, widely-available English print newspapers here in Seoul.

As for the National Enquirer do they run stories on history and foreign policy??? Do they even attempt to pass themselves off as comparable in some way with they New York Times??

I don't know, you tell me, as apparently you are such an avid reader of the Enquirer so as to be able to determine whether or not they have engaged in racist and war-mongering stories.

And I'm sorry for lumping in the Weekly World News with the Enquirer, as the Enquirer has much higher journalism standards.
