Basic, what exactly is 'a race' -- define it.

Since you are Irish and a lot of Irish seem to think this way, how would you define race?

I think the term race is generally used to refer to people of a particular ethnic background, skin color or physical characteristics, and religious practices.

For example Koreans vs Africans.

But since you're Irish, you might say: There is only 1 race - The Human Race!

I think you're talking about an ideal rather than a reality. Plenty of (younger) Korean women drink to excess. I don't think it's a whole lot different than in the West, actually.

Claiming that Korean women don't drink indicates two things. One doesn't know Korean women very well, and one doesn't get out much.

I met a foreign guy who'd lived in Korea for over a decade and was convinced that hardly any Korean women smoked. Seeing as how he wasn't blind I just assumed he lived in Korea with his eyes shut all the time.

If you A) don't drink and B) don't get close to any Koreans, I can see someone arriving at that misconception.

It could also be a geographic thing? Thinking back to the spitting thread, lots of people said they never heard/saw the lung clearance thing, whereas I hear it at least 10/15 times a day.

But saying Korean girls dont drink just shows what level of hermit-ary youre living on...

There's no way the spitting thing is a geographic thing, that just means you're living on Planet Korean Female Temperance. I've been all over Korea and live in a Korean enclave/work for a Korean company in the States. The throat clearing stuff is just something Koreans are prone to do. I'm guessing that all the Koreans at my gym here in the States don't all hail from the same town in Korea, and my shower room sounds like there's some machinery in it or something what with all the throat clearing.

@Shimo

"Since you are Irish and a lot of Irish seem to think this way, how would you define race? "

I am not Irish.

"I think the term race is generally used to refer to people of a particular ethnic background, skin color or physical characteristics, and religious practices. For example Koreans vs Africans."

Is there a 'Korean race'? Is there an 'African race?'

Is a Libyan from 'the African race?' How about an Algerian? Is he from the 'African race?' How about a Bushman from the desert in Botswana -- is he from the same 'African race' as the 'African race' Egyptian? How about a Saudi, who is of darkest , deepest black hue of slave stock -- is he of 'the Arab race' or the 'African race?' How about a dark olive skinned European Sicilian or Sardinian, many of whom are of North African Muslim ancestry? Is he from 'the African race?' And what of the light sandy haired, green eyed Algerian? Is he of the 'African race?' Is a Libyan Jew, or Ethiopian Jew whose ancestors had lived in Africa for a thousand years, also of the 'African race?'

And what of the 'Korean race' -- Is a Korean, whose ancestry is Manchu, Chinese and Turkic-Mongolian from 'the Korean race?' Is that person from a 'different race' from a Korean from Cheju-do who has no Turkic Mongolian or Manchu ancestry whatsoever ?

"But since you're Irish, you might say: There is only 1 race - The Human Race!"

Easy on the lazy stereotypes Shimo.

Top of the morning to ya.

So a Leprechaun Laughing drinks 50% more than say an American, big deal. When I was teaching in Thailand, there was a guy that was suspended for showing up to work with alcohol on his breath. He was an American. So I've met Americans that show up to work with alcohol on their breath, Irish that drink heavily, British that are complete assholes etc.

In most academic disciplines that deal with such issues, "race" has given way to "gene pools".

So I had you pegged, then. I went with my gut feeling and 1 out of 2 isn't bad. I thought you were Irish, though. Like you, the Irish go on about 'there is only one race - the human race.'

That's ridiculous.

Depends where he lived. When I visit Seoul there's always a double take moment when I see the first girl smoking because down here I practically never see it. To the point where it's something I'd remember and I'm almost certain I haven't seen a female smoke in the last few months. In fact the last example that comes to mind was well over a year ago

Korean women hide their smoking. In terms of drinking, it depends on the individual. If they are young and don't care, then they will indulge. Some are Christians, and they probably won't partake. Then, there are those who are married and are well set up and will down the soju like there's no tomorrow. Those who are not married see drinking as a necessary evil to tag the men they are interested in. It's all about strategy to obtain status. Sure, they can have fun in the process, but it comes down to that. They are like most women in the world. I said "most" assholes. Not all.

Most Korean Christians drink. I don't know where this is coming from.

As for smoking, agreed. You might think they don't smoke, but they totally will in a hof with closed booths, they just won't do it openly.
