a few years ago i was in toronto...well toronto/scarborough with some friends for a convention in toronto.
on our last day we took a taxi to the train station(in toronto) from scarborough.
at first it was great cuz the dude hit every single green light and it didn't seem like he was trying to rip us off. until he tried to drop us off at a bus station and then claim that he heard 'bus' and not 'train'.
now we were all native english speakers, (i'm assuming) so i dunno how "TRAIN" sounded like "BUS".
he almost seemed mad about it...
then he took us to the right spot...without turning off the meter...of course |
LOL. lmg, what convention was happening that could possibly warrant you being in the ghetto (scarb)??
but i know what you mean though. i'm a torontonian and once in a while when i have to take a cab the drivers try and take me on the 'scenic route'. now, i know this city like the back of my hand so, when this happens, i always try and give the cabby an exact route i want to take when i tell him what my destination is.
point being, cabbies are (in most cases) crooks anywhere you go. i think i'd be too if i did that job! |

Taxi drivers are taxi drivers. And those that flock around airports or international bus/train/ferry terminals are the ones to be most wary of.
I've never had any problems with Korean taxi drivers. |

ajstew is correct. Korea is the only country in the world with dishonest taxi drivers.
awesome! |

That's not what I'm saying. Sure there are drivers who'll take you the long route in any country, and they'll probably play dumb if you question it, or say that they know what is best. I've just never experienced such lying right to your face that can be so easily shown to be the case in a matter of seconds. |

I had similar things happen in Beijing. When I was at the airport, I had some ridiculous prices quoted to me. I simply took the bus.
I was talking to a taxi driver recently here, and he said that it's common for a lot of people to argue about what is the best way. i.e. all of us think cabbies are ripping us off. I know I get paranoid about them. |

umm...when 90% of the city's murders, rapes, shootings, robberies, home invasions, etc, etc (and the list does go on and on) happen in a certain borough, i think it'd be safe to say that it's a 'ghetto'. not all parts mind you, but ALOT of it is. i used to live in agincourt (asiancourt) in scarborough and remember when it was such a nice place to live. now look at it.
mind you, regent park is no picnic either. if given a choice, i'd probably rather live there than in certain parts of scarb... |

Me neither. There was one guy who wanted twice the metre fare for the ride but I was okay with that as the director was picking up the tab. (During the ride I wrote down the cabbie's number and gave it to my WJN with the bill. Later in the day I heard a lot of yelling and screaming coming from the office. After it was done who walked out of the office but my friend, the taxi driver.)
The worse taxi drivers I ran into were the ones in Bangkok. About every other one wanted more than the fare on the metre for the ride. (Like the guy who wanted 500 baht to go to Kao San Road which was a 36 baht ride from my hotel). Never paid more than I had to though. I understand their perspective though. Bottom of the social ladder (or at least close to it) in a poor 3rd world country (which Korea is/isn't depending on which edition of the Korea Times/Herald you pick up) trying to make an extra buck anyway they can. Who can blame them for trying to jack a bit extra from the rich (from their perspective) white guy? I don't. |
