Those are terrible romanizations. Really, really bad.

I agree. They are not to be used for spelling. They are phonetic helpers. I put them all in quotation marks for a reason.

The 10 Words for Newbie Dummies guide is for the absolute beginner.

"annyeong haseyo" does NOT help figure out pronunciation if one is approaching a foreign language for the first time as a newbie off the boat.

"ann-yawn ha-say-yo" helps you know the breaks and approximate sounds ("yawn","say").

It is to help for the first day or two. Hope it does for someone.

I think it's interesting to see how people spell out Korean in the Latin alphabet - you can almost guess where the people come, judging by what word they give is most similar to the Korean pronunciation....well - Americans seem to have problems with and ...they seem to be quite similar for them. Giving as in 'yawn' seem to follow only American pronunciation, and doesn't seem that close to the Korean one IMHO.

Rolling Eyes I know, darn it. I know. The sound is close, not perfect. It's a 10-minute guide 10 Words for Newbie Dummies. When I first came I found all the pronunciation helpbooks too detailed for the little time I invested in it (I should have studied more, but didn't).

"ann-yawn" is approximate and one will quickly make the small adjustments as one quickly hears it said. But anyeong haseyo was totally unhelpful for me when I came because I didn't know how to read it.

Close, but no cigar. I'm all Canadian. Very Happy

So, you fellow dummies out there. Do what I wish I could have at least done. Print off the ten words phonetically spelt then jump on the airplane and come on over. Then stop being a dummy and learn how to read the language. Or, don't be a dummy in the first place, and learn the alphabet before you come over.
