Around Namba or Shinsaibashi Station... I haven't bothered booking a hotel yet, as last time I was there I ended up being out all night anyways.... Also, I've got a friend from Canada living there, so I may end up just sleeping on her floor or something...

I'll definitely be mostly around Shinsaibashi though, as that is where the consolate is, and I like that area at nighttime.

All right. Be sure to check out that huge bridge in front of Osaka station - it covers a huge swath of roads and is so big that bands play there every day. One band I met played three concerts there every day, brought generators up to power the amps, made a number of fans and just got signed.
Watch out for arrogant expats who have been there for nearly a decade. Surprised

Nice! I love the liveness, so I'll probably try that on Thursday night...

As for the arrogant expats, I've met one that was pretty apparent that he didn't care for my and my buddy's presence in their pub/pick-up joint... And the others were kinda standoff-ish. I think it was more "blockery" than anything else...Coolest foreigner I met there was a Nigerian dude, actually...

Chillin' Villian,

if you're looking for a good hotel in Osaka, i found one around 5,200 with breakie included. the room ws quite large, too. it had a coffee maker, iron, and microwave oven. you also get all the tioletries and shaving supplies free as usual.
the only prob is that i can't remember the name.
i was located north of nagahori-bashi subway station. walk north from there, over the canal bridge. the hotel is within 1 block north of the canal. it is a very thin dark brown and black building with a center sliding glass door.

there is also a capsule inn for 2,600. it is located in the Kita district. the name is Capsule Inn Osaka. address is 9-5 Doyamamachi.

Good! Welcome back. By the way, where did you stay there?

Capsule Hotel?

My experiences with cheap internet and Japan is almost non-existant.. how'd you manage to post once in an awhile during that time?

I think he was sleeping in an internet cafe. I live in the suburbs outside Fukuoka, and there are a couple of internet places here where you get your own booth, complete with semi-reclinable chair (if you're lucky, you can score a "pair booth" that comes with a sofa). Your booth comes equipped with computer and gaming console. They have free beverages and you can borrow manga and DVDs for free - including pixelated porn. They sell packages of time; if you buy a block of 5 hours it works out to about 3500 won an hour. These places will even provide you with complimentary blanket, pillow, and alarm clock. They're popular for crashing for a few hours after a night on the piss when you're waiting for the first train back home.

I'll be in Fukuoka next week.. good for me. I'm thinking about 4 nights in Fukuoka just to get a real good sense of the place. I might have to utilize those my first and last nights Wink

Tiger, go to the Nishitetsu train station in Tenjin (the trendy/party area of town). Go to the North exit from the train platform (there's a big escalator/set of stairs). There's a giant TV screen there. Behind that TV screen is a tourist/travel information office. You can get a free copy of a magazine called Fukuoka Now (available online at http://www.fukuoka-now.com/index.php ). The magazine has advertisements for Internet cafes (e.g. "Cybac") and other places to go/things to do.

PM me before you come and maybe we can roll together if I'm up in town when you're over here.

Ken

Edit: For the love of Pete, why did it beep out the name of the station? Oh, now I see - it has "poop" in the name. It's "N i s h i" "T e t s u."

yes, the others who posted between your question and now were correct. i was in a hotel for about a week. but when it became clear that i was going to be in fukuoka for longer than that, i was told about the internet cafes. if you don't mind roughing it a bit, they aren't a bad option at all. the upsides are that they are relatively inexpensive: 1980 yen for a twelve hour stretch. the chairs are comfortable enough (but by no means a suitable replacement for a bed), there is a multitude of ways to entertain yourself in there (internet, tv, dvd's, magazines, playstation 2, etc...), and you needn't completely abandon your personal hygene, for they have a shower room, and a foot bath (just a pool of hot water with bubble jets in it.) also, there are two drink machines with a large variety of free drinks. myself, i'm a coca-cola man, so i was a little bit dissappointed that the soft drink of choice they had was pepsi, but there was also grape soda, orange soda, lemon soda, many varieties of coffee and hot chocolate, tea, and some other things that i had absolutely no clue as to what they were. they also offer food, but i didn't eat any of it so i can't assess its quality.
the down side is that you are stuck inside there for the duration of time that you plan for. if you leave prematurely, you must pay for your time package (4 hours, 7 hours, or 12 hours... at one of them, they even offered a full 24 hour package for 2500 yen. i almost did that one day.) and get a new package when you enter again. the other downside is that if you have a bag with you, and you're only in the internet cafe for 12 hours or so, then you have to tote your bag around with you for the other 12 hours that you spend doing whatever it is you have to do during the time you don't spend inside there.

there are a number of ways to live on a limited budget in fukuoka and still have a pretty good time. as far as food goes, wendy's cheeseburgers are 105 yen. mcdonald's hamburgers are 85 yen. but as broke as i was, i usually coughed up the extra 20 yen for a far superior fast-food experience.
for the night life, i mainly stuck to a bar called 'happy c o c k'. they have happy hour every weeknight from seven to ten, with 200 yen drinks. not bad. you can also buy a two hour pass for 1500 yen which lets you drink as much as you can get down for two hours. on fridays and saturdays, it turns more into a club, and you can get a 3000 yen party pass which lets you drink yourself silly all night long. this can really increase the comfort of sleeping in a chair in the internet cafe. there are other bars which are also very nice, but i tend stay with one bar wherever i go. it's worth noting, however, that if you go to a bar called 'off broadway', the owner is the spitting image of gregory hines.
as for other things to do, you can go to the giant shopping mall, canal city, to look at all the things you can't afford to buy. or you can go to a number of parks that fukuoka has to offer, and be surprised at how much it isn't like korea.
so have a good time in fukuoka, and if you go to the happy c o c k, tell them bob sent you. cheers!

i only know the two cybac locations. they are both right around the bars.
they both have showers.
you need to become a member though. it's free. you just have to sign up and get a card. and don't forget to specify just how much time you want to spend there before you get your booth. good luck. i'm almost envious of you. i really did leave part of myself in fukuoka.
