Just because the hogwan/school pays for our apartments does not mean that they have the right to evict us without due notice. That is our home and we are protected under Korean law in this area. If his boss tries to throw him out have him arrested for assault, if he enters the apartment without your permission have him arrested for break and enter, if he removes anything from your apartment have him arrested for theft.
I say move out on your own time but dont let your ex-boss give you the bums rush. |
Many Korean people(if not most) don't care about the law. My boss tried throwing me out by grabing my arms and pulling me but I'm a bit bigger than him. The police came and went, they don't care. If I tried to have him arrested not much would happen, the police certainly don't care. I have video of him trying to get me out of my house, taking my stuff out, and changing the locks. A Korean lawyer told me my evidence is not good, but it was O.K. for my boss to take pictures of me(that is good evidence). If I changed the locks he would change them again. The first time he stalked me after changing the locks(he waited in his car for me up the street and then gained access. I went to the police(the big police station), nothing happened. I went with Korean and asked the police if I can break a window and go back into my apartment, they said yes and I went back and broke the window and slept in my bed.
I can sue the guy in criminal court but I'm already there due to accusations by them(I'm also in civil court). What would I get if I sued him in criminal court? Not much if anything if there ain't much damages. All that would happen is the guy could possibly spend some time in jail or pay a 300,000 Won fine. I'm in a much worse situation than iiilcaylpso and nobody cares, I can't even get a job. I'm looked down upon by everyone including some simple A** American who once asked my for a reference and then won't give me one in return. I'm just trying to say that the suggestions you make have far greater consequences than you can imagine(unless your very wealthy).
Now about an earlier response on page 1. I was in a very similiar situation about six months ago. I didn't threaten lawsuit I simply told them I will get a lawyer, they said "go ahead." And if iiicalypso threatened lawsuit I don't think much else would happen. What would iiilcaylpso sue for? |

Ok... here I am in day three of my struggle. My next deadline is tomorrow at 11am, when I am supposed to be out of the apartment. I have moved most of my things out of here, in case I have to leave under duress tomorrow. I must say that this is having a definite effect on my health-- this is the most stressful situation I have yet encountered here. I sent a polite message to my boss telling him that I was ready and willing to move out as soon as he gave me a LOR and my pay, but I have heard nothing.
More disturbing, though, was that I noticed that one of my locks was changed yesterday, which means that someone must have been here while I was out. At first I just assumed that the reason the key didn't turn was because I had only fastened the deadbolt, but then I noticed that the position on the lock was different, and sure enough, it was a new lock. They apparently decided that they would leave me alone until tomorrow morning.
I am beginning to feel as though I have to stay here, because if I leave I think they will lock me out. My plan right now is to stick to my guns, metaphorically speaking. My GF will be here tomorrow to interpret, since in my creeping paranoia I am sure that the police will be called.
Thanks again for all the advice, and thank you also to the trolls for sitting on their hands. I am sure that in the end I will probably look back at this and laugh, but right now I am just stressed beyond belief. |

Wire your door up electrically so that anyone not wearing rubber gloves gets fried. Videotape your boss dancing like a frying penguin. Watch tape again and again laughing gleefully.
Have you tried contacting the embassy? |

-thats what they want you to be. Sit back, relax, and stay composed. Remember that they're probably more afraid of the whole repercussions than you are.
I hope you photocopied all the hagwon parents phone numbers from the roll call sheets. Thats agreat tip: let him know that you can contact all their customers to tell them about it....believe me, its the equivalent of an atom bomb to a director. |

So is calling the tax department.
I recommend to anyone thinking of staying more than a year to save up key money, take the rental allowance from your school, and get your own apt. It's not that hard to do and it provides more stability of residence than school housing as even good schools can suddenly close and you find yourself with 1 week's notice (or less) to get out of your apt--to where?!!! Who needs the stress.
Amongst other things, it's lovely to be able to finish working (however that may come about) and then plan *a nice vacation* instead of having to start packing/find another job/apt to move to right away. |

Of course she was. Not only was she making fun of RR, she was also (inexplicably) making fun of the OP.
And that's a mark of maturity because ...? |
No she wasn't. She never said anything about the OP. She was simply doing a version of "countdown until RR posts in this thread, 5,4,3,2,1..."
I didn't notice YOU giving any helpful advice, so I guess that makes two of you. |

The never ending story continues.
Sorry about the self pitying tone here (I know that there are worse off people here) but I really don't know what to do next.
Last week, after three trips to immigration (my ex-boss didn't show up the first two times we had an appointment, went on his own, apparently made a stink that I didn't show up, and then just left the paperwork) I finally got my visa cancelled. I asked the immigration officer for extra time and he said no, and gave me until 4/13.
I have had other people call on my behalf, since trying to talk to him man to... hagwon owner just made things worse. He still refuses, and gets angry at anybody who calls. Someone suggested that I go there in person with my girlfriend and talk to him, and she agrees. I think it is a colossal waste of time, and I have no interest in doing it.
He still hasn't paid me, and I understand that if I file a complaint with the labor board immigration will extend my stay until the matter is settled. I think that this might give me a little leverage (I could care less about the money).
Option three is to just pack up and come back in October, when my visa expires. This is the hardest choice to swallow, since I think what by ex-boss is doing is wrong, and I don't think people should be allowed to get away with things like this. Plus, let's face it, I am angry.
What should I do? |

| I'd report him to the labour board. Why let him get away - money is money, big or small sum and you should get what's rightly yours! |
