The wariness and aloofness of Koreans towards foreign employees
and colleagues is a social malaise that permeates the public schools
here. The subtle forms of discrimination and outgrouping I've had to
suffer these past six years as an English teacher in Korean public
schools have been unsettling. Ironically, or perhaps naturally, my
students have been able to warmly embrace me as one of their own
bonafide teachers, showing me the admiration and respect that I had
received from my public school students back in Canada. I suppose
their uncorrupted innocence has insulated them from the prejudice
Korean adults feel towards foreign nationals, not to mention the racial
bias and cultural arrogance Korean adults harbour against us in various
degrees. Cool
