I hate jumping into a thread late - so many things to comment on.

First & foremost - Director's Meetings, esp. in smaller areas, are a big deal. There is usually a 'Hak-won Association,' and when they have these meetings, it is common for the schools to shut down and everyone to have a day off, or to have a cleaning/activity day of some kind. Unfortunately, I can't tell you more about that - but I can confirm that is the way it is done in Jin-hae, Ch'ang-won, and Ma-san still (my ex-Prez was Pres of C-W association).

Usually, the contract throws in a catchall along the lines of 'and other duties as deemed neccessary.' I would imagine that is where this falls. In my old school, hours were never really counted; there were extra duties - bus duty, occasional school cleaning days, English clean-up editing, demo lessons, etc. But, as others have mentioned, there were a TON of perks - cash holiday bonuses, higher salaries than other schools, , use of the owner's condo membership, big private apartment, extra holiday time, free lunches & dinner/drinking nights, even paid-for school trips (staff only - no kids) - to places like Gyoung-ju & Je-ju.

None of that stuff, on either side, was 'in the contract.' It was a give-and-take situation.

As for my school now, hours are not counted (phew! I am just under the 3 mil mark, but only teaching 18 hrs/week), but there are really NO extra perks, besides private housing). And, no one ever comes to us for much of anything in extra work, either. There is no one to clean our rooms - the 3 subject teachers each have their own rooms, and each is responsible for it. Big stuff - painting, waxing the floors, wallpaper, etc. is the school, but we take care of the day-to-day stuff.

Here is what it comes down to on my end: do you like working there, with those people? Do they treat you well otherwise? Then throw on some lazy day clothers, be sure you have your tunes & some snacks in tow, and do a little dusting & team mopping (that means 1 person with the wet mop, followed by the other with the dry). Shouldn't take THAT long, and you are one up on everybodys list.

Comes down to that family vs. business thing, I guess. Surrree, it would be nice if a school treated everyone like gold, and didn't ever ask for anything much in return. But not very likely, regardless of who you know.

this thread got big kwikfast.

for all concerned: i got roped into doing this after i was told that i could take the day off but would get docked a day's pay if i did so.

however, I did find my forte early on in the day when it was discovered that i could move heavy stuff with relative ease (compared to the other 10 teachers who are all female). Thusly, I was put on furniture moving duty for the day and never once touched a mop or a broom; as well i managed to rationalize myself out of going to the gym for the day.

You should not be cleaning any fucking floors. I would tell the guy to go plug him self with the broom stick and then do a run to Japan or somewhere else. Leave that sorry sack of shit. He is not worth your time. I would even go home. Leave the land of Kimchi and head for the hills.
