K.O. so I've had few beers - it's time to type on Dave's.
I agree with those who say it is good to help the less fortunate. However, we have to realize that many of us Westerners (especially, it seems, men) have a "Messiah" complex (I'm here to save you from yourself!) that gets tapped into whenever someone from less fortunate circumstances asks for monetary assistance. This is especially true when the requester is an "ex" something or other, an LBFM, or even a 4F. Why do you think these girls mentioned by other posters keep e-mailing guys - because it works! The morality of the issue, I agree, is irrelevant.
I was just wondering though, if you have a hundred bucks to spare, isn't there an orphanage filled with Korean children that have been "thrown away" by the great Dae Han Min Guk nearby that could use some toys or a pizza party. How about sponsoring a deserving student for a months tuition at the hagwon - if you work at one. There are many "good" things that can be done right here in your town with that money. To answer any critics - yes I have and am doing both of my suggestions myself.
But hey, if you feel it's right to send the money (and wait for another heart wrenching request) then do so. |

|
|
The key here is does she really need the money and are you the only one she is asking? I have lived in VN since 1992 and have found that most girls need money. Salaries in Hanoi average $100-120 US per month and that's good money. Per capita income is less than $400US per year in the rural areas and about 85% of the population is living in rural areas. Hundreds of young girls come to the cities every day in search of money to support their families.
Lonely foreigners in a foreign culture are easy targets for pretty , young women who need money. I have know those who were playing several foreign men at the sametime and neither had a clue about the other. One woman I know has a foreign husband and a foreign boyfriend.
The most common themes of desperation are;
- my mother,father , family member is sick and I have no money for the hospital , doctor or medicine.
- My mother/father are dead and I must care for my younger brothers and sisters.
- My mother/father owe alot of money and must pay it now or they will lose their house and will be on the street.
- I had a moto accident and if I don't pay x amount by -------- I will go to jail.
The list goes on. All of the above situations occur daily in VN. Knowing if what your ex says is the truth , with little or no knowledge of the culture , language , etc. is like navigating through a mine field. It has been my experience that most of the times the situation is BS. Numerous times I have had my VN friends verify information given to a foreign friend or employee only to find that mom died 5 years ago , etc. I checked up on a friend's wife who had to go home to her village to care for her sick mother only to find her working in a karoke in Hanoi.
Good luck. There are many sincere women in VN that have real needs. Beware , for many more it is a business and a profitable one at that. |
