History says it was a snake bite, but I'll have you know that Cleopatra died from all those buff slaves standing around fanning her with palm branches all day long.

Nice to see this old topic up and live again. Whenever I miss a good old topic about fan death in Korea. I come here around summer time. Laughing

Having a fan on in a room would increase the total heat in a room. It also doesn't use any oxygen. Hmmm..more Korean bullshit.

we all laugh at this fan death thing, but how many of you were told, time and time again, that you must wait 30minutes after a meal if you wanted to go swimming?
failing to wait your 30minutes would result in cramping and certain death by drowning.

Funny how nobody has caught on that there are fans in air conditioners. I`d also would like to know why nobody has begun a campaign to warn people of the dangers of driving a car with the fan turned on. Lucky for my dad I came to visit this summer. He could have died if I hadn`t warned him of that big ceiling fan of his. Laughing Laughing

A/c death is also a common death in Korea. (ac/dc death not since Bon Scott) Fan in a car? Now that's just silly. Fan death is real and nothing to be taken so lightly.

I've heard it heats you to death, freezes you to death, dehydrates you to death. Either way, I'm plenty scared. Actually if it dehydrates you I guess it turns you into kind of a human jerky. That makes shipping you home so much more convenient and cheaper. The old man could probably just fold your body into a carry-on bag.

Be careful. You don't want to be going home carry-on.

You got me thinking about another strange anomaly in the theory. Why aren't there more people dying on flights to and from Korea? The air is circulated by fans in all airliners after all.

The fan death thing is pretty strange. Koreans usually ride mopeds and motorbikes without crash helmets, a lot of Korean guys chainsmoke and drink at least two bottles of soju a night, there is a ongoing threat that North Korea will freak out and will seriously damage Seoul in a few hours and with a nuke or two they'd destroy it....

But people worry about electric fans....

Weird, I like it but it's weird...

I think it is really just filler material for lazy Korean journalists. In the horrible weather in Korea from mid July to the end of August they cannot be bothered writing anything so they pull out fan death stories, to sell more copy with minimum effort.

I know I get a bit lazy when the weather is like it has been recently, but I try and do a proper job. I don't make up new English words or anything!

I guess Kimchi is only defeated by the fan death phenomena. The god old stuff keeps you safe from pretty much anything else of course..

I've actually slept in a room with a fan on and the door closed many times.
Upon telling people this to prove the myth wrong I was told that I did not die because I'm not Korean Laughing Shocked

Of course. That makes complete sense. It seems like there's always a Korean moutaineering expedition trying to conquer some of the highest peaks in the world, where temperatures are far bellow freezing and the air is thin, but Koreans can't stay in a room with a fan. Besides, anyone who has lived in Korea during the winter knows that the doors and windows are far from being airtight.

If you do die from fan death, you'll make the Korean Darwin Awards.

Have to wonder though:

If it's the cold caused by the fan, how come people manage to live through winter?

If it's the flow of air, how come people don't die on a windy day?

And what about the geezers who ride their mopeds sans lid; all that cool air blowing in their faces has got to be putting them in levels of danger comparable to bomb-disposal technicians. Brave knights of the road, and no mistake.

Could the fan be the cause of drool on my pillow in the morning? Laughing
