Say what!
Hell no!
I'd tell wangja...NO! I'm going on vacation! Vacation means just that! I am not going to help you move on my vacation! You have alot of balls asking me!
And all the advice on this subject..."make an excuse to the boss" is crazy! What is wrong with being honest and straightforward?!?!?
You chicken heads who want excuses made are nuts! Just say NO! |

Right on Right on!
Just say no or say you have plans. You dont owe them an explanation and they should not be asking you to do anything on your vacation. End of conversation. |

you shouldn't have told him that you would show up.
Once you did tell him that you would show up you should have shown up.
What you just did is as low as what he did to you. Two wrongs don't make a right.
you just made situation worse than it would have been.
early on you should have said that you weren't going to go. YOu should have stuck to that message. YOu should have tried to have gotten your coworkers to give the same message to your boss. He woudn't fire the lot of you. Like I said before once you said you would show up you should have shown up. Live up to your word. |

Agree strongly. What's worse, saying 'no' right off the bat, or saying 'yeah, I'll go for 2 hours' and then not show up? You've made the situation worse and bad vibes at work just aren't worth it.
BTW, if you were just at home, not doing anything, why not just go in for the 2 hours you agreed to? Had you been away on vacation, then I'd understand a little more, but you weren't.
My prediction: You've done yourself a dis-service here and your relationship with your director will be at least uncomfortable, if not stand-offish. Live and learn. |

I've gotta agree that you've messed things up worse by saying you'd come in and then not going. Lying to your boss isn't cool. Seriously, you weren't doing anything, right? You were sitting on your butt at home posting here on Dave's. That's not a good way to keep things good. You should have just gone in for the 2 hours you said you would. It wouldn't have killed you and it would have done wonders for your work relationship.

I have to disagree somewhat....most of the time...with koreans...FT's still get screwed over by just going along with wangja. In the end...most lose out on severence, etc...so...it does wonders for the work relationship....not usually.
Sure...it would not hurt to help out...but wangja has a short memory and won't remember that. |

Yeah, and I bet he ain't gonna be givin' any warm goodbyes at the two hour mark when you say "I'm outta here." Should never have agreed to anything. |

i see it simple from the start:
If you like your boss and you wouldn't mind doing extra work for him then why NOT?
If your boss is an ahole, then forget it, just tell him, "no, sorry." If you feel you need to give an excuse, give one. But no is all he should need. Otherwise make it awkward.
you: sorry can't make it.
boss: oh. why not?
you:...uh.....uh....uh.... going to...no....uh..... visiting friends on Jeju.
but saying you'll go in is just not smart.
Was that supposed to be some form of protest? If so, shoudda reconsidered how you "put your foot down". |

because this is Korea....give em an inch and they will take a foot and expect a mile.
this is not like back home where your boss thinks of you as a human being(hopefully) |

I thought that what I told him was fine. It was my vacation and I didn't think it was fair that he demanded I give up a day of it. There wasn't much he could say to that.
Now to respond to some of my critics:
I admit that telling him I would go in for a little bit on Wednesday was a bad idea. To be honest though, when I told him I would go I was being sincere and planned on going right up until I tried to get out of bed. I was being selfish and I'm not ashamed to admit it. My bike had been stolen right after the conversation with my boss and that basically turned it into one of my worst days in Korea. I went out for a few drinks with a friend. I woke up with a bit of a headache and thought about everything that had happened. I knew that I would have to fight to leave after only staying a little while and didn't have the energy. It was a mistake on my part.
As for me not doing anything and just posting on Dave's instead of going to help out, it was my vacation. I should be free to spend my vacation however I decide. If I wanted to lay in bed all seven days that should be completely up to me. Also I don't think my work relationship was so great to begin with. I'm sure I've completely alienated myself but that would've happened regardless of whether I went in for a couple hours or not.
Had he asked nicely if I would mind helping, it would have been a completely different story. I remember when he first brought it up and asked if we had had plans. I told him I thought I might go to Vietnam. He basically just told me sorry but I couldn't go. He offered no compensation, no incentive. I really didn't want to set that precedent.
It would have been nice if the other teachers could have organised something to tell him we wouldn't be coming. The 2 other foreign teachers though (a couple) were upset but didn't want to ruffle any feathers. They are dying to get their bonus in 4 months. If I couldn't even get them on board what chance was there of convincing any of the Korean teachers.
Anyways, I'm back to work tomorrow in the new building. I'm going to apologize for not keeping my word about going in for the few hours but otherwise I'm not going to apologize for anything. Those were the only days that he has absolutely no rights over me or my time. Let's see how things go down. |

i don't think so.
not at my school.
Just because i hold to what i said before, doesn't mean i'm gonna go off and do anything the boss asks me to do (above and beyond i mean). I still say no to my boss all the time. But i'm not of the "give em an inch" philosopy cause frankly, if you can't even afford to give an inch, you must seriously be stuck where you are.
i help them, they buy us dinner now and again. Besides, i see how ran down the korean teachers look. they make what 2/3 my wage and work 75% more than me. Geez, i gotta pull at least SOME of my weight around the damn place. |
