and if wal-mart was so great, it would have gotten rid of costco right?
You simply said how could a company like wal-mart have such low prices if it paid workers more. I was merely pointing out that Costco has found a way.
The reason costco doesn't benefit as many shoppers isn't because of bulk or membership fees (what is it? 25 bucks a year?). No, wal-mart is simply more prevelant and easier to get to for your average joe in most of america. |

Because it is more successful than costco. A good measure of how a company is doing is its expainsion and franchise operations.
One thing about the wages too. You think half of the people employed at wal-mart would even be allowed to hand in a resume at costco? I think wal mart does a lot by employing the elderly as 'greeters' (are they actually necessary?) and the mentally handicapped. Sure others get paid more at costco, but wal-mart employs those that costco would not. Therefore what some would earn at wal mart is minimum wage...what they would earn at costco is...ZERO.
and yeah yeah, i am sure somebody will have seen one old or handicapped person at costco and because of their one isolated experience my whole rebuttal is null and void...blah blah.....i'm talking about trends, though. |

| I make 5.15 an hour at Wal-Mart. I get 200 bucks a week. This means the only place in town where I can afford to shop is Wal-Mart. And the cycle continues. |

This is Walmart's government subsidized labor. They get their social security check, so paying them peanuts is okay. The do perform a function- they both greet and direct the customers, but they also provide security in the guise of the friendly little old man/lady.

Then, go back to school. Don't be a victim to your own inability to trust your abilities.
But, I suppose now we can have a 10 page discussion about how there may actually be people who are unable, for a variety of decisions, to go back to school. In which case, apply for other, better jobs every day. Spend an hour of your day applying for jobs. You will find a better one. Repeat this process, all the while working hard at your jobs to get good references, until you have a job you like and a wage you can live on.
In the end, Wal-Mart employs the unemployable. And if you are employed there, you aren't likely to ever be employed in a high paying job without a large investment in your own human capital. This may require disconnecting the cable TV, quitting smoking, waking up an hour early and, god forbid, studying.
And, if you are the type who has a BA in some 'ology', then your low wage is your own darn, bad decision making, fault. You are lucky it isn't Burger King.

I encouarage Canadians to shop at Wal-Mart. Canada has the rgressive gst, and all provinces except for Alberta have sales taxes-by shopping at Walmart, the federal and provincial government gets les off the top-which menas more of a percentage of gross income stays in the pockets of the working poor.
If Liberal party supporteres and their ilk wanted to change that, they would kill, scrap and abolish the GST like The Red Book circa 1993 said they would do.
