And there is no, or minimal amounts of Vitamin C in Kim Chi. The worlds best urban myth, perpetrated upon these idiots from 17 century Portugese sailors (who didn't even have any idea of what vitamin C was/is.) |
Cabbage is a good source of vitamin C but
| Quote: |
| Cabbage contains more vitamin C than oranges, as well as a large number of minerals, including iodine, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The outer leaves contain more Vitamin E and calcium than the inner leaves. Making cabbage into sauerkraut actually promotes healthy intestinal flora and strengthens the intestines. Cabbage also contains a factor called Vitamin U, which is an ulcer healer, helping both peptic and duodenal ulcers. Many of the healing properties of cabbage are attributed to its high sulfur content. Grated cabbage has been used as a poultice for the treatment of wounds, varicose veins, and leg ulcers. Cabbages should not be sliced until they are ready to be used as this tears the cell walls, releasing the enzymes that hasten oxidation and destruction of Vitamin C. |

No, but still concerned because I can't bring myself to eat fruit unless it's given to me. |

| I remember reading a book that may have been fiction that on a long voyage in a old-timey ship the sailors would mash the worms from the fruit that had gone bad on board into their gums to stave off scurvy as long as they could. |

Scurvy is a deficiency of some vitamin or other. Sailors used to get it all the time and their teeth fell out making it impossible to eat their shoes when the food gave out altogether.
It's why the Brits started giving limes to their sailors, hence Limeys. |
My father was on a ship in the Navy during WWII. He was a handsome young man with a mouth full of healthy teeth- he lost every one while on ship. He thought it was either the water or something they were testing on the sailors- it was probably scurvy! |
Anti Malarial meds I bet. |

| I think in Korea, one should be more worried about rickets, due to a lack of Vitamin D. Does the sun ever come out here? Gotta love those perpetual gray skies. No wonder people hardly smile here. I swear, the weather is making me turn into a bipolar depressed person. I need some CA weather! I've never been a sunbather and I wear sunscreen everyday, but really, what sun??? |

Is that what that was? I never finished Shogun. I read Gaijin first and when reading Shogun felt I was reading the same 1000 page book over again and just stopped at some point. |

WTF? Apart from in summer it's sunny all the time in korea. You should go try living in England or Scotland for a coupla years, THEN you can complain about a lack of sunshine. In fact for 4 months I didn't see the sun at all once. (I worked nights, and sunrise was about 9am and sunset about 4pm.. I usually didn't go outside until after 4pm)
And another offtopic question; you've been in Korea for like 6 years.. why are you working in a bad hagwan? From what you've posted it isn't even a good hagwan job you've got.. couldn't you find anything better? |

One teaspoon of pure lemon or lime juice a day will keep scurvy away.
If you feel you aren't getting enough vitamin C;follow this easy step for a scurvy free life!
Keep a bottle of lemon concentrate in your fridge and take a teaspoon in the morning with a water chaser.....problem easily solved...no scurvy! |

My hagwon didn't get bad until a few months ago, when management did a complete turnover and we got a new boss, too. Talk to my coworker who has been in Korea for like 14 years. She's even staying on for another year. |
