When I asked the recruiter for a contact, even a Korean teacher, she got nervous and explained that in Korean culture it would be insulting to go back to the director and again ask for a contact. Does this sound right?

If the director means the statement at the top, a little cultural faux pas is allowable. I would not teach at a school without first talking to someone who is currently there. And not while the director is sitting in the room with them while they talk to you.

Just my $0.03.

Good luck.

In all fairness to hogwans there are people who come over here and are not ready to teach, social misfits and generally nutjobs of the first degree.

Look at the freaky waygookin thread for examples.

At ECC in Suwon before I got there they had a teacher that attacked another teacher in his sleep(tried to strangle him....not that I blame the guy they guy that he tried to strangle was an ass), when the teacher complained to the hogwan the owner went to the apartment to talk to him and his bedroom was smeared with feces(as was he)the teacher was also naked and had arranged all of his clothing in neat piles on the floor.

Now what kind of story do you think the crazy teacher would have had?

That being said almost all hogwans are spawning grounds for demonic possesion anyways!

GEEZ......that really happen!! disgusting and nuts!!! freaky just doesnt describe it!

so i've been here two weeks now and all's well. i recognize that i may just have gotten lucky, but my boss is genuinely concerned with my comfort and wellbeing, the apartment's great, everything is as in the contract, and my director has been accomidating in every way i've asked for. the school is quality, payday hasn't rolled around yet, but i'm sure it won't be an issue. so maybe intuition does cross cultural boundries...

oh, and RBI has been great...i would highly recomend them to anyone coming to the busan area.

now just have to figure out how to live here - everything's so difficult!
