So we are essentially in agreement. I would encourage all of us, however, to model the use of the language well. To that end, if you mean archaic, go ahead and say that at a level your students can understand. I, too, do this. You correctly, I believe, pointed out that we all do. In fact, must. But do we not owe it to our students to give them clear and accurate feedback?
So, if something is correct, but archaic I will tell them something like, "That is correct, but not common now."
We used that back in the 60's.
That is an old style.
Etc.
If it's wordy, then why not simply say that? Tell them it's correct, but then give more succinct examples. Better yet, try to get them to, either at the time or as homework, extra work, whatever.
Etc., etc.
I just hate to see teachers tell students that something is wrong when it is not. It sends a very poor message that the student has failed when they have not. They have studied, are trying/making an educated guess and are waiting to see the result. The result is correct. Where did they err?
We all know how hypersensitive they are to failure. That point is rather perversely/ironically juxtaposed with the fact that they expect correction because it is all they have ever known.
What to do, what to do... Whatever we do, I hope we will all award approximations in the right direction and correct usage. |
