It seems that to be a winner, you must be happy. to be happy in korea, it seems that you have to make peace with the culture and system here to some degree. Those who do manage to, are winners- although many people would call them apologists.

Thank You! I'll accept my medal now! I'm a winner! And I have no apologies to anyone.

Rapier, you are so right.

I haven't made peace with the culture, but I'm happy anyway, as outside of work I control carefully who I associate with and essentially create my own little bubble of sanity. Do I get a "winner" sticker too rapier?

Kwi:You're a winner. Building and maintaining your own sanity bubble is the best effective survival tactic in this country...
Desultude:I don't agree with a lot of the culture here, but I can understand it better now, and am resigned to it, and don't bother trying to fight it like I used to...a peace of sorts..

Perhaps it's all relative to time. Some go like this over time:

Apologist, whiner, loser or loser, apologist, and then whiner. Finally, some go loser, whiner, apologist and so on.

Perhaps it's all relative to genes:

Some have the genetic make-up of a monkey and so can eat bananas all day long. Some have such thick skin that the frost doesn't bite.

Perhaps it's all relative to relatives:

Some had relatively decent relatives and so were relatively relative. Some did not and so carry that baggage to Korea translating into apologist, whiner, or loser.

Perhaps it's all relative to culture and statistics:

Some country folk may be statistically higher whiners, apologists, or losers.

Perhaps it's all relative to normnative ethics:

Today a whiner is this and tomorrow it's that. Today a loser is this and tomorrow it's that. Today an apologist is this and tomorrow it's that. The question in our context now- what is it now? - and so people feel bad or good based upon today's answer.

Wouldn't that be partly determined in how that peace is made? e.g. to make peace one must disgrace Aristotle and the basic fundamentals of logic.

Or

Wouldn't that be partly be determined by the final episode of one's drama. e.g. Teacher was "happy" for a long, long time and then- teacher went crazy in the final episode and lost everything to the chants of whiners- "I told you so."
