that was a decent story, but i'm kinda perplexed at the wild response it got. he coulda just said, "I went to a korean hiphop club and the normal shit went down."

i went to this hiphop club in daegu. i was lost and asked this GI there were it was and he told me, "go down that street until you see a bunch of niggers," which was, you know, a slightly different description than what i found in the Lonely Planet. so i go in the club and (gasp!) there were actual american black people in it.

and you know how rap songs will ask you to throw your hands up in some way or do some special dance, but nobody in korea does it because they don't even know about it? at that club, they actually had some people who understood the lyrics. which didn't really make the place any cooler, but it was interesting.

Sorry, i don't frequently frequent hiphop clubs either in Korea or anywhere else, so none of it seemed "normal" to me.

Surprised
Haha...jokes. I think she meant you look like Greg Kinnear in the pic... Anyways, don't let "Black Music Club" (it's actual name is , btw) be entirely representative of any type of social scene here. It is merely representative of, um.... itself and other hiphop bars. There used to be a discreet sign at the front of that bar that said-in English- "If you start **** here, we'll kick your ass!" (in those words... I can only guess who helped 'em write it). Although there IS a rather large way-gook contingent that runoff there from Rockssin on Friday's, and a number of 'em certainly ARE attention-seekers... (not implying anything). Anyways, I used to like that place on Tuesday nights, but the hangovers are always a deterrent these days.

OMG you know who I want to punch? All the people who have pictures of *other* people in their avatars. Especially the dudes who have pictures of chicks as their avatars, or the white guys who have pictures of Korean guys as their avatars. Those jerks make it impossible for me to mentally keep track of who the different Dave's posters are.

Then WTF do you have Greg Kinnear as your avatar?

1) Yeah, I totally missed the point. I am, in actuality, functionally illiterate.

2) The 'she' assumption is understandable, but mistaken. I just think that a picture of teenaged BoA pointing a toy gun at herself is amusing.

If it will help alleviate any confusion, this is similar to what I look like on any given weekend.

Joe, too bad you missed the Korean nightclubs of the last decade. The music was so very asian...so were the dance move for that matter. Very original in an innocent and cute sort of way.

Nowadays, the kids are trying an awful lot to look cool, to be more cosmopolitan, thus the plundering of African American culture (actually, copying what the Japanese have been doing for 10 years). Ironically, odds are that Korean kids would run the other way if they ever saw African Americans walking down the street, or that they'd make asses of themselves by saying "Wassup, yo!" (their words, not mine) if they ever came across the the embassador of an African nation.

That's fine, only problem is it looks like photo booth photos and therefore it isn't clearly a celebrity. A photo that's clearly a celebrity would be less confusing to poor Joe. Anyway, I met you once, you're not so ugly. Why not use a real picture?

Noraebang's are less crowded. You can do all the dancing and fornicating that you want and not have to deal with any madness.

Can you meet people? Not hookers I mean. If one is going out by oneself does it make sense to go to a Noraebang? Please educate me.

Meet people? No. Everyone always says, "You went by yourself!?!" It can be quite fun though.

I usually go to the smaller bars to meet people. You can always strike up a conversation of some sorts at those and get them to dowload music. Places where you can hear yourself think. I always wake up with a headache and a bunch of phone numbers I never call though. Except for a couple of foreigners that I hang out with from time to time. But I live in the boonies and when I go to the "big city", I'm always on some sort of a tear. Comes from scratching at the walls all week.

Okay. You've convinced me to change my ways.

(You know what they say about flattery.)

Still need to get around to making a documentary. 'Joe Doufu's Dance Madness', perhaps?
