So it remains perfectly fine to download music in Canada and yet blame the U.S. for picking and choosing which NAFTA and WTO rulings it will respect. |
NAFTA copyright provisions aren't overly impacting (uniform copyright expiry dates, for example) and I can't recall anything serious. There hasn't been any case I've ever heard of brought up about it. Further, WTO "rulings" simply are that WTO rules require countries to follow the Berne Convention. And the Berne Convention under Article 9 states that countries can pass laws to allow duplication without the author's consent.
Not that you should be attacking Canada on this one, as U.S. law allows for pretty much the exact same thing as Canada. The Home Recording Act of 1992 pretty much gives free reign over non-commercial copying, for example. |

The thing is, it isn't illegal to down load music in Canada... |
Come on. Are you saying Canadian law doesn't respect intellectual property and copyrights, or that it picks and chooses which intellectual property and copyrights it will respect? |
He's kind of right-about a year ago a court said that ISPs can not be forced to give customer activity to anyone unless it has to do with child porn or other nefarious dealings. So if the ISPs aren't forced to do that, no way can downloaders be prosecuted-they didn't really say it was illegal or legal |

Umm, I was talking about NAFTA and WTO rulings with respect to trade, specifically the softwood and beef disputes with the U.S.
Guess I should have clarified that though. Mr. Gopher was referring to another thread when he made the remark I was responding to and so was I.
You DO realize that my remark you quoted above WAS a statement and not a question, right? I was supporting Canada here and not attacking it. |

I think downloading music is a legitimate way of getting music. |
As my friend Manner of Speaking is so fond of pointing out to me: you don't get to decide this. |
it's just my opininon. I KNOW I don't get to decide.
The world would prolly be pretty messed up if i were allowed to run it. But i think that's true of anyone, and i mean ANYONE on this board. |
