I kind of think that these guys were just trying to fit in with you, Sooke. Seeing how you like "to dispense insults" like "your mom's" and other such witticisms. I'm glad you really showed those guys some class by putting down their manhood. Did you talk about "their moms" too? Probably not, eh? Only on the forum?

Wow, what a set of gems! I have to say I totally didn't believe you, and didn't think there would be any way I would believe such a perfect crop of Korean-generated "-isms", but after I read the composition of your class, I think I might understand.

To the people suggesting (or connotating) Sooke's will is to blow this out of proportion-- I wouldn't take it that way. He's admittedly condensing 4 weeks of dialogue / writing into several hand-picked phrases that shocked him. I like to make similar lists of the most shocking things I've noticed in a job or other situation. In the states, I taught court-mandated domestic violence offenders non-violence skills, and thus from the many ex-military personnel I worked with, I am not surprised by these comments.

That is to say, I am not surprised by the comments of any group of young men coming out of a military situation (any military)...especially ones so fresh out. I'd say the comments are more interesting on the topic of the military that happents to be in Korea, rather than Koreans (who were in the military).

Yup, Sooke, those are some beauts. A sad beauty, but one worth looking at, like any other elements of nationalism and authoritarianism. I would love to teach a similar set of students.

I think the O.P. shows a lack of balls for allowing any students spew this vile *beep* in class.

From an teacher's perspective (someone who "educates"), I can understand what you mean, but I think not allowing students to say these things is also not very possible. They say that because they were in a "vile *beep*" immersion environment. Just as children learn English better when they marinate in it, soldiers learn a lot of "simplifying facts" about the world they live in. It helps to make the world simple when you're a soldier, and not just because it's easier to spot the enemy.

When you work with people thinking like that, there's a better chance of encouraging a change in attitude by not accepting these ideas, and offering alternative bits of logic. But, given 4 weeks and the fact that OP isn't their to teach anything but English, that's difficult too.

But do you think that just telling people to shut up, or punishing them for it with bad grades / scolding (what do you propose?) is a great way to change that attitude? These men need time to re-assimilate into non-military life. I'd save the lecture on the extent of comfort women in the Chosun dynasty for later...

Yeah I've heard variations on pretty much all of these, including 'Koreans gave China their culture'. 'Koreans invented hip-hop' is a new one, though. Guess I'm behind the times. 12-60?

just to chime in, I used to be the soldiers. Throughout college and high school, whenever I had to take a nonsense bull$hit course, I would cause a disruption. Usually, my buddies would join in. Why? It was bull$hit anyway, why not? It was funny. THIS is what you have, they think that you're class is dumb and they're trying to make it a bit fun.
