Mindmetoo,
Thanks for the anecdotal information on PKD. I know it can
sometimes be difficult to separate the author from his body
of work. But, in most cases, I think the separation is necessary.
Especially when much of the information about the authors life
is so suspect. And if you don't believe the evidence you submitted
to be something close to pure crap consider your source.
really.... the FBI?
come on... |
Sure, I guess the FBI is in the business of making up letters from obscure sci fi authors.

True one has to walk a fine line between an artist's artistic output and, say, his involvement in the Nazi movement. However, who we choose to diefy is partially based on the life they led outside their craft. We may be stuck with anti-semites/literary geniuses in the current canon but the weird literary market place of ideas that gets, say, a PKD book added to university literature reading lists doesn't always look favorably on authors who seemed anxious to turn in other writers to the FBI.
There's a good, well researched, no holds barred biography of PKD out there called Divine Invasions
I'm not saying his books aren't worth reading. I've ready about 5 of them. I'm just saying academia, which was moving him along rather rapidly for canonization, is taking a long hard look at the more odious elements of his life. |

Mindmetoo,
My response to what you wrote about PKD was
coarser than I intended.
My point was that what you wrote was anecdotal.
In fact, at first, you wrote that he accused other
writers of being communist. And in your last response
communist changed to nazi. Also, the link to the FBI
letters gives little information to support what you wrote.
No mention of communists either.... only nazis.
Plus, I have extreme doubts about the FBIs credibility.
Those doubts aside, I saw nothing even slightly damning
in the FBI link you provided.
I really like PKDs writing and I guess I was just
instinctively defending him. |

Mithridates...how can anyone hate Luke skywalker??? Star Wars was and still is da bomb! Can't wait for the boxed set of all 6 movies to come out on dvd...probably pay $200.00 for it when it does but hey it's only $$$!!!
I had a hard time picking between Star Wars and Star Trek for your poll OP. Star Trek is such an uplifting and inspirational series, I almost picked it over Star Wars, but alas but heart belongs to the force.
BTW I loved Star Trek Enterprise! I cried when the last episode aired and they killed Trip!!! I wanted to see some more Vulcan on Human action myself...(sniff) |

Errr. I'm writing off the top of my head about what I read a few years ago in the biography I quoted you. I'm sorry I can't post scanned pages of the biography I read.

Yes. Here's one where PKD was fingering Lem as a commie:

No. I'm talking about two different things. Where I use the term communist, I'm talking about PKD writing to the FBI and accusing other writers as being communists. Where I use the term nazis, I'm speaking to the idea of separating an artist (any artist, not PKD specifically) and his work from the way in which an artist conducted his personal life. My example is, if a loved artist turned out to be a Nazi and aided the holocaust, should still celebrate his artistic works? Many people would say yes but other people would say no.

Why? They're suddenly trying to smear the good name of PKD? To what end? PKD isn't exactly the most influential dead artist on the planet. Tarnishing his reputation isn't going to advance any agenda by the FBI.

Yeah I like his stuff too but if you check out the research people have done into his personal life, you'll find some pretty compelling evidence he was not fully sane and he was trying to get his fellow sci fi authors in trouble with the FBI. |

Actually in a lot of sci fi circles, Luke Skywalker (or at least Mark Hamill) is loathed right up there with Jar Jar Binks, Boxey, and Wesley Crusher. |

Yeah I know Mark Hamill has been picked on by some of the geek patrol in some circles. I've never gotten it! The whole frickin' Star Wars universe is based on Luke and Anakin and yet it's so popular?!? Some have called him a whiner?!? If you were stuck on a backwardass planet like he was in Episode IV you would whine too! Besides the character was only 18!
My 2 cents. |

Oh, yes!! Too twisted and brilliant to have been written by a mere man.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Neal Stephenson's "Diamond Age" and "Snow Crash". Each one presents a fantastic world that could/should be serialized right-now-this-very-instant.
William "Neuromancer" Gibson's books have been wholesaleslaughtered by the Hollywood Big Studio Money Machine. You'd think he'd get a clue and stop selling the rights. Books: FANTASTIC. Movies: STINK-O-RAMA.
So, Lucas has agreed to do the "in-between" Star Wars years for the telly. Please, if you exist god, do not let him write OR direct OR do anything other than collect his FAT paycheck at the end of the day.
Oh, and the correct answer to the original poll is, of course, Herbert. |
