| this is my first week in korea and the director makes me come in at 3 till 11. is this normal? i havent got my schedule yet so for the past 3 days just been sitting around, feeling restless and doing a lot of scribbling. Do u think i should have a word to the director? |
Let me get this straight, he has been having you sit around for 8 hours every day with no classes, or any other work, for three days? That's not a good beginning. Your boss thinks he owns you, and you really need to put a stop to that ASAP. |

Mr.Blackcat
I understand what you are saying, I have been there too.. but this is not a case of too much time.. this is a case of not having enough.
You guys we literally can't go to the bathroom sumtimes until we bust, let alone have any real break at all.
We sumtimes stay in the staffroom a bit longer but they have been starting to round up the kids to get to class and us too on time.
NO break, NO lunch or dinner time. NOTHING. For almost 7 hours. Comprende? |

You make the time. Someone gives you a hard time, you tell 'em.

3-11...this school doesnt only teach english but also korean, math and science thats why im there till 11. Regarding schelude, he expects me to write up a lecture about what i am going to teach before each class. I am teaching elementary students how to say kangaroo and gorilla. I can just go into the class and just teach without preparing...how long do you guys prepare for each class? Im new to all this so a little input with be greatly appreciated.
thanks |

Yeah, Zack_in_Korea, I get your point. I just mean that you might think breaks are what you want, but maybe not. Remember, each hour you sit at work is an hour you're not doing something you want to do. I have to adjust to not having the extra time at work now and maybe would think breaks are the way to go if I hadn't experienced it before.
But I'm the type that just likes to get stuff out of the way. I really can just turn it on for a few hours and power through things. I go through my kinder in the mornings now without a second break. But before, relatively speaking, I had a lame schedule at this specific school and didn't like just sitting around while others came and went.
Like I said, the grass always seems greener on the other side. If you feel like you really need a break just talk with your boss. Make sure s/he understands that your teaching is suffering.
Unfortunately, it seems like its all or nothing over here. Either you get no breaks or you end up with hours worth of them. So I guess I just mean 'be carful what you wish for'.
Good luck. |

i understand ur point mr blackcat.
its not much of an issue as it seems to be for me.. i just didnt ever hear of a school not giving a break for foreigners. it could be worse... they could be yelling at us to get to class right away, which would be the worst thing they could do cuz things are already tense.
i told my coworkers about the suggestion of 20 minutes extra inbetween the 8 classes but thought 10 might be enough.. because with the ten we have already that would be 20 total and fine. we are thinking about it... only problem is that sum of the kids would have to wait for 20 minutes.
anyways our next battle is taxes.
i have considered this topic closed kind of.. as i thanked everyone for their input.. thanx guys... i am starting a new one though |
