The fact is that the polite, civilised American tourists go by unoticed because their behavior does not draw undue attention to them. The ones who get all the attention are the rude, obnoxious a-holes that are the basis for this thread.

Maybe all us Americans should read this!

Umm.. this is from the UK Telegraph. This is basically the view the British mass media projects onto Americans.

The wording of the article projects all the common negative stereotypes the British have always had from a media perspective on Americans.

As for the actual guide of 'simple suggestions' from the Embassy.. they are fairly simple and actually pretty good things to post for people going overseas for the first time.

Actually I wish more embassies from other countries also told their people abroad many of the same things which included - speak slower to locals abroad, listen to others, don't lecture, think locally, and talk politics don't argue it.

Its almost ridiculous all the negative stereotypes the UK Telegraph decided to add in and throw in there way beyond what this 'guide' from the US Embassy actually says.

It's not saying anything different to what was in the beginning of this thread. The paper didn't add anything, so i don't know why you are so offened by it. (But because I'm not American, I can understand why you would be more unhappy with it than I).

Well, as an American.. particularly when I've met Europeans.. I've heard a million times.. 'you don't seem like the typical American'.

I've dared to ask as few times 'what is a typical American?'.. and I always get the same response.. 'well, y'know.. you guys are really fat, large, ignorant, extremely loud, talk with your head in your ass' on and on.

The article played up to all of those stereotypes.. even got a really badly dressed overweight guy with the subtitle 'ugly american abroad: worrying accurate'.

I had been traveling to South Africa, Korea, Thaliand and India before, and many times I came upon seeing disgracing American sucks...attitude on bargaining price with the sellers and sometimes throw money on the floor purposely making difficulties for the seller to pick it up even when the deal is closed. Their room that they stay is always a mess and they always see non-American as dirt and less civilise people.

Funny I have travelled around most of Europe, Jakarta Sri Lanka, Korea, Thailand, China, Mexico, and Japan. I have never ever seen this kind of behavior. I have seen some loud military guys and have called them on it too. But in all my travels I just haven't seen or heard about anyone doing what you said in your post.

That was racist. What are you doing in San Fransisco if you think Americans are such horrid people? No, the rooms we stay in are not always a mess. Rolling Eyes Where are you getting this from? You clean rooms in San Fran? How can you tell the difference between a room that belongs to an American, an Italian, or a Chinese? "Always see non-American as dirt and less civilise people". Please. Do you have any idea how much money Americans give to charity each year to help-out Oxfam, etc. or adopt children from overseas? Your statements are ludicrous, and I don't understand why you are in San Fransisco if you hate Americans so much. We don't need people like you with your racist attitude. Go home.
