I'll say one thing against hagwons: it should be 25 hrs/wk and not 30. I think Grotto has been saying this, but it's not really an industry standard. That's why teachers should be going for the 2.2 salary. The extra 200,000 takes care of taxes and other bills. You really have to know what you're getting into when taking a haggie job. You must know your rights and have a good contract signed that shows your schedule, overtime pay, etc. When done right, a haggie job can be a nice experience. There are always headaches though with these types of jobs and with public school jobs.
I find that anything over 10 students per class is really getting to be to much. When I was in French immersion back in Canada, we had no more than 20 students. And we were learning French all day.
I believe the goverment will catch on to how much of a waste of money it is to tax payers to have a native English teacher in public schools.
And who knows what goes on behind the scenes. Yeah, sure the government pays you. But, you must remember, this is Korea. Mr. Principal and a group of others could be making money on the side.
It's not my cup of tea. I'm not going to "pick a job in the country". I'm not in the market for that type of job. I do, however, work in the country. There are some benefits to that.
Be my opinion what it is, I think that public school teachers should have a higher base salary than hagwon teachers because they have to teach more students per class. At least 30,000/hr. Anything over 20 students per class should pay 1000 Won/head. |

Funny you should say that...the 30,000/hr. At 2.4 M and 80 hours a month, that's exactly what it works out to be. I just found that rather amusing. |

Well, that's what you should get paid. I think you mentioned that you have a 25-student class, but I think you said one time that you have smaller classes. I guess it averages out.
What if you were teaching 25 students every class? Do you think 2.4 would be a good deal? Probably not. |

Jinju. Dude.
You wanna clarify who you are aiming that last shot at? Only it comes across as a tad sweeping. Plus your use of language is, um, shall we call it, creative. Not that I'm doubting your abilities, of course. I'm sure you're great at teaching Engrish and all. |

ONLY at jacl. So relax. As I said before, I think if you are happy at a hagwon, then all the power to you. I would never look down on hagwon teachers or question their professionalism. Never. I dont like hagwons as I think they give teachers a real raw deal. Low wages, mediocre vacation time, poor treatment. My comment was directed at ONLY jacl, no one else. |

Excellent, my friend. Excellent. Glad we got that sorted. We're all pals here, right?
Don't blame it on the sunshine.
Don't blame it on the good times.
Blame it on the boogie.
Right...? Yeeeaahhhh.... |

What's your problem?
Jealous? No. Little? Not quite. Pathetic? I don't know. Maybe.
What's "birnig"?
I don't think I can find much better than where I am. I make over 2.65/month and I get over 100,000 in pension benefits. I only pay just under 50,000 in taxes. I'm not jealous. My biggest class is 10 students. |

Your salary sounds fine. Do you also get 3 months off a year? |

I don't think so. My rational for believing so? The superintendent for English education in Gyeonggi-Do pointed out that having a native English speaker had increased the level of English for students in those classes. In other words it was proven (or so he claimed) to help. |

I'd think it was fine. I have no problem getting 25 10 years to sit down and do their work. Then again I do speak some Korean which greatly helps, although I try to use English as much as possible. Now if I had more classes that would be another story. |

No, but you should get more vacation time if you're teaching 20 to 40 students pre class. I get 10 days. I only take about half of that because they need me there. Nothing is 100% perfect. Believe me, I have my gripes. I get paid for the days I don't take and I make well over 2 million/year in summer/winter camps and other OT.
Teaching too many students at once is just not for me. Early mornings neither. You can have it. This is where I want to be. You can call it an investment of sorts. I make good money. I have three computers (two brand new and one old one that's my boss's). I use one of mine in my classroom. It's a plan. I think that a small class size is where it's at. At least for me it is. Six students is the max. Imagine if each student is paying 120,000/month for 3 hrs/wk. That's only 10,000/hr. Good deal for the parents and a good deal for me. Anyway, that's the plan. Teaching at a public school would only get in the way. |
