JINJU - Sounds very nice also but what is there to do there besides sit at the castle and read?
Is there any nightlife?
What essentials will I need to regularly travel for?
Is ther a gym or more importantly a B Ball court?
Is there a good recruiter or school in the area you would recommend?
Library? Bank? Book Store? Doctor? Dentist? Internet Cafe?
Would Jinju suit someone for their first year/taste of Korea?? |
When I lived there in 2001/2002 the expat group would be out drinking and partying 5 days a week. There are several clubs here. The expat community had (I dont know i they still do) a soccer team and it was pertty regular that we played every weekend. Yes, theres lots to do. A lot will depend on the other expats, but when I lived there it was awsome. I wasnt bored.
nightlife - check
gym - dude, its a city of 300,000 not some hicktown. There are plenty of gyms
there are libraries, banks, doctors...its a freaking city not a hamlet.
You can get 99% of whatever essential you need.
geez. |

My original choices are Busan, Cheong Ju, Cheongwon and Daeju as I think Seoul may be a little bit too full on for me, I get annoyed queuing and being bumped around and don't like the idea of a full on pollution zone!
I am from a big city in the UK so am not phased by city life but now just want somewhere that does offer the vibrancy to go out if I want to but also I can get away from it just as easy, I dont want to travel miles for necessities, I do want to go on nice walks, I would like to go mountain biking, I would prefer to be near sea, I would like a gym at hand or a B ball court nearby, I do want access to western food if I feel like it, it would also be nice to meet a few Americans, Brits, Australians etc doing this work also as well as friendly Koreans. |
As many others have said, it depends a lot on what you want, your personality, and other factors.
I've been living in Boo-sahn for about six years. All the things you mentioned can be found, but not as easily as in Seoul. The sea and the beaches are here as well as less people and a little less pollution...about the only advantages over Seoul. I'm a little biased towards it as I now know it fairly well and enjoy my life here.
Many people will say that Seoul is the best. Again, that depends on what you want. It probably is the best for things like nightlife, international foods, concerts, and similar. I've never lived there, only visited about 15 times. Lots of foreigners, parks, and a few mountains. No real sea, other than the Han River. Lots of pollution. Some subways and areas are really crowded. Extremely easy to get anywhere else in the country or out of the country from there(after the wait in traffic, that is). It's okay. If you choose to not work and live there, you should at least visit it once to check out some of the popular areas and just to say that you were there. The Koreans I've spoken with there have about the same English ability as any other Korean in any other city...you just might find some more and a few of them will be less hesitant to use it.
Sorry, don't know much about Cheong-ju and have never been there. Heard a few good things about it by posters here.
Been to Chang-won a few times. It's alright. Most of what you're looking for can be found there. However, of the three separated cities(Chang-won, Jin-hae, and Ma-san), Ma-san is the one on the water(and didn't seem like the best place the one time I was there - but that was only for two hours).
I lived in Daegu my first year here and it was great - yes, bloody hot in the summer and pretty cold for about a week in January; however, not bad at all. All the things you mentioned are available except for the sea. There is water and water parks and lots of mountains and lots of pollution, but no actual sea. Lots of military personnel as well as there are two bases and an airbase/field/strip/whatever it's called - you can get Taco Bell there if you have a friend who signs you in or have a Korean friend who's doing Ka-choo-sah and can sign you in, if you're into that kind of thing. Going there for a wedding tomorrow...it'll be good to be back.
Jinju. Hmmm...been there about three times, but it was always at night and I didn't have much opportunity to check the place out all that much. Seemed a little small, but cleaner than a lot of the other places you listed. As Jin-ju said, it'll have most of what you're looking for. |
