| I guess I wouldn't class CDs as a collection. But I just remembered, I have a 500 or so classic 60's and 70's vinyl record collection. They are stored at my mum's and I have most of what is on there either on CD or mp3. So I guess that now qualifies as a collection. |

| Irrelevant Tangent: I once heard Jay Leno, or maybe it was Johnny Carson, ask this exact question in his monologue. The audience reaction surprised me. People burst out hooting and hollering, laughing, screaming, cheering and stomping. "Woo-hooo!! WOOOOO-HOOOOO!! Hell yeah!! Collect things! Woof! Woof! Woof!!" It went on for quite some time as the camera panned across the studio audience to show the utter pandemonium this question had triggered. I think it was at that moment I gave up trying to understand American humour. |
The hosts of these talk shows usually go out and do a 5~10 minute "warm up" with the audience before the taping of the show. The viewing public doesn't see this part of the show. My guess would be the host and an audience member had a funny conversation about collecting. |
Letterman makes jokes which only the audience gets like every show. I love Dave, but always found that annnoying.

Yeah, I think I know what you two are talking about -- the pre-show warm-ups and the inside (gotta be a regular viewer to get it) jokes -- and that wasn't the case with the bit I was referring to. It was just lead-in to just a stand-alone joke in the middle of a monologue full of stand-alone jokes; it had no relationship to anything else. The crowd didn't burst into frantic, foot-stomping, hootin' & hollerin' because "How many of you collect things?" was a witty allusion to some funny bit they (and not the at-home TV audience) were privy to. No. They reacted the way they did because that's just how those audiences tend to behave. I mentioned this only because the thread topic specifically reminded me of it. But it is an example of the general phenomenon you can see on those shows -- Leno, Letterman, all of them. |

Don't you worry about knocking them off the shelf while dusting?

| Beaver, that's great! So you collect full, unopened bottles. As big a fan of Coca-Cola as I am, and I do love that product, I couldn't keep a collection like that. Me or some drunken friends would pop those suckers open and drink them one night. Guaranteed. |

One of the hundreds of beautiful things about living in Korea is that I can have a case of Coke, all in glass bottles, delivered to my door with just a phone call -- no temptation to drink the collection. |

| It's on hold because I live in Korea, but I'm building a nice collection of American history books. Excluding World War II you would get a pretty complete history of the twentieth century from me right now. |
