I know a Phillipino/Canadian (sp?) guy who tried to get work at a hogwon and had a bit of a difficult time. He had excellent pronouncation and was a real nice down to earth kind of person. I still have to wonder if most Korean parents are looking for the "white" native speaker.
Im not saying it's right or wrong, but that the perception of Korean parents hasn't changed enough to warrent a flood of English teachers coming from there. If it did happen, it would be years from now.
I also have to wonder in general how much the Ministry of Education cares about students learning English. The bar right now is set pretty low in terms of "native speakers" being able to come over and teach. Yes, that helps all of us in terms of pay, especially when it is tougher for hogwons to recruit teachers (in economics it goes both ways at some time there will be a job shortage I'm sure).
So any recent college grad with C grades who likes to get drunk and party can come over here with no teaching experience. I'm not saying all native speakers are that way, however there are just enough to make the rest of us look bad.
Maybe it's time to raise the bar a bit? |

| Non-existent, Chinese-born, native Filipinos migrating to and teaching in China are rare indeed. |
Yeah, I am not sure why a Filipino would go to China for $450 a month. That is similar to the wages being offered in the Philippines. |

I am sure that there are also plenty of students with an A average who get drunk every night in Korea as well. |

It's not Korean parents perception that prevents them from coming and teaching English though, that would be Immigration's requirements. If Immigration were ever to change the rules I'm sure there would be many people from there with adequate English-speaking skills trying to get a job.
It's already happening with this voucher system.
And the more that Westerners come over here and make all kinds of demands the more pressure there will be on Immigration to get people over here who will be thankful for a job at 1.4.
Not right now maybe, but eventually they are going to get tired of hiring spoiled pampered (in their eyes) Westerners.

| I think there's too many people here worried about job security in Korea. If you are this paranoid about overall job security in this country, you must be a real l.... If Koreans want to hire people from India, Nigeria, Philipines etc., more power to them. If they did that, maybe it would help them to learn appreciation for other cultures besides their own as well as develop more tolerance for other races of darker skin tones. I'm not worried about long-term employment in this country as there are plenty of other more beautiful, peaceful places in the world to teach such as: Thailand, South America, Middle East, Taiwan, Europe etc. I'm here for a short-time paying my dues and then you can have my job. I'll be off to greener pastures. |

oh just in time for this note I got from good ole mom back home today:
"Sorry your having so much difficulty trying to get these Korean people to learn English. I know you are a good teacher and they should be happy to have you in their country. Well keep smiling and laughing and have a blessed day. Love Mom."
I'm laughing, smiling and having a very blessed day! |

Amen from the choir, Lemonade. Yeah, I think that people that are worried about losing their jobs here must be complete losers because if Korea is all you got in life...well, that's pretty pathetic. I've got enough money now to leave and live well for quite some time. I don't need Korea. Korea serves a purpose and then it is on to greener(beachy) pastures for Mr. Master. You have to understand that to people like the Urban Myth...Korea is the greatest thing and they can't imagine living without it. Whereas, normal people say, "Korea doesn't want foreigners anymore...fine, I'm on the the next plane home". If I had to leave Korea tomorrow, it wouldn't be a big thing because I would just get set up back at home and all the SE Asians can come running to Korea and live in its tolerant society. Bottom line: If you need Korea, you are in a world of shit... |
