| A few years ago, back in 2001, I went to a coworker's baby's first birthday. I put 5,000 in an envelope and got the cold shoulder the following week at work. Guess it wasn't good enough. She was only a coworker, though, not a close friend or family member. |
Lol. No wonder. If you gave someone $5 back home...that would be an insult there. |
People give what they can afford, though. |
Then I hope you got a much higher paying job. Maybe one that pays a million a month...lol.
You're telling me you could only afford 5000 won? |

jacl... it is common for Korean people to invite the whole office to a large celebration function like that - even if you were ignored at other times.
It's just not a done deal to pick and choose who you'll invite and won't invite because of the *face* (pride) issue folks here has.
I think it is rather unfair to call it greed......
Just what I think. |
Greedy is expecting gifts from aquaintances.
Are you sure it's culture to invite the whole office? Is this a strictly followed tradition. I don't think it has anything to do with culture.
There haven't been any weddings or new babies at my hagwon. There was, however, a rumor that the receptionist got an abortion. |

We seem to be going a bit off topic, but I think there are some good comments.
Princess, you are so right, that people give what they can afford. But then again, some times the people who can afford it the most, give the least. (in every country)
About Koreans inviting the whole office....they do. My adult students tell me that each month they give a certain amount of money in a general fund. It is used for weddings and funerals. I have asked "What did you do this weekend?" and they have said, "Oh, I went to a wedding, or Oh, I went to a funeral" Seems they have lots of weddings and funerals. WHo died? Oh, a co-workers dad (?) Oh, a friends uncle.
ANyway, to the OP, what are you buying for the birthday gift? |
