Whereas the average North Korean may have nothing, you can bet the leadership is living in the lap of luxury. They are not going to throw that all away. They are masters of buffling and appearing insane...but if they were, they would have tipped their hand long ago. The leadership does not want to lose their comfy positions. They will bluff and bluster (like they always do) but do nothing unless they are attacked.

Bingo.

Agreed, but what if their funding dries up? The US isn't going to willingly prop them up forever.

The funding won't dry up, thats the point of this whole thing. As long as NK is seen as a threat the US will keep throwing carrots at it. It sees the wests attention turning to Iran so cooks up this new missle test to grab attention back to itself.

I think Junior is right about them faking the nuke threat. Saying you have nukes gets attention and keeps everyone from attacking you, even if you cant prove it.

The U.S isn't funding them. And that's China and South Korea who are propping them up with oil and food. Both countries have a long term interest in keeping the status quo.

Yep, they'd have an even harder time finding WMD's in NK than they did in iraq. I highly doubt the irrational, starving paranoid Koreans have what it takes upstairs to make an effective nuclear weapon.

Koreans are masters of game-playing, melodrama, brinkmanship, a skill they've developed over centuries to manipulate and keep bigger aggressive nations at bay.All about show and appearances: posturing and puffed up poppycock. Its part of the Korean psyche now, from the hottie K-girl, to the hagwon director, to the top politicians of the country. they rely on bluster, threat, control and intimidation.

But if you call their bluff, they crumple like a pack of cards.

The US is the number one provider of aid to the north.
