I think I gave the local Hof ajumma conniptions during the game.
Or maybe she thought I was retarded or confused. She rooted for USA,
as did my spouse. I just wasn't into it, and didn't think USA would fare well.
Ajumma was totally lost after the game and I was clapping.
It's not a matter of national pride for me. I'm a proud Miguk, even served in the military.
I just never knew anything about soccer until I left, and I see it as an international sport.
Not like rooting for my Dallas Cowboys. |

I doubt Hiddink will stay in the Russian job for 4 years. He'll do well for the Ruskies in the 2008 Euros and then look for a new WC side.
Could be America......but I've got a feeling he'll be coaching Japan in 2010. I doubt I'll be in Korea in 2010 (although one never knows) but if that did happen I'd definatly like to see the reaction over here. |

Everything else we seem to have talent at.
But Soccer? I think we need to lay down martial law. Anyone getting caught playing soccer on American soil should be immediately cornholed and shot. |
Yup America does suck at soccer. They've never won a soccer world cup, just like Korea. |

America is not a superpower. To be a superpower, you need to win wars. America was very, very strong in the 60s and 70s and it lost a war to a bunch of Vietnamese folks hiding underground. These days, it can't even occupy Iraq, even WITH British help. No country that has lost 2 wars in its 50 year reign can be described as a superpower. America is potentially the biggest superpower ever - but it will never achieve it. That title belongs to England, whose influence can be clearly observed in 33% of the surface of the planet, including North America, who were fortunate enough to inherit English culture, as opposed to Spanish/Portuguese cultre, observable in Central and South America. |

| English culture is fine, but what's your beef with the Spanish and Portuguese? I love both countries. And Latino culture is as good as any. |

I really love Tony Blair. I have to say that.
But let's be honest for a second. When an Englishman or Canadian, for instance, goes to Korea, it is usually for an economic opportunity. Your socialist system of government has pretty much made you guys economic refugees.
When an American goes to Korea, it's usually for a year or two. They spend their dough, go home, and get a job.
I'm not saying this to be petty or nasty.
If I were an Englishman, I wouldn't spend my time bashing America. I would spend my time bashing a government that has made it almost impossible for me to find a decent job in my homeland, a job where I can make a living.
This isn't a snipe. I respect people who would rather work than sit home and collect dole. |

One last thing about American soccer and how bad it sucks.
We had four shots on goal in three games. Four. That's pathetic.
And FIFA had us ranked fifth in the world.
Gentlemen, step away from the crackpipes. |

I'd like to see your sources for those last two accusations. |
Both of the accusations are at least 5 years old. The Nike one I think I read on MSN or heard it on the radio.
The marathon story was in a major newspaper. I had it for sometime, but chucked it. I'll just tell you now that I heard these stories from what most people consider to be reputable sources. ie: Associated Press or other major news organizations.
The Nike story, you might be able to find by doing a web search.
You know, all sports nowadays is treated like a cash grab by the corporations with the stupid public running out and spending all their money like their cash is burning holes in their wallets. Look at this soccer craze in Korea. You can be sure tha there are a lot of businessmen trying to figure out how to capitalize on people's irrational behavior. American business people are no different. Just some of them are dirty. |

the United States and South Vietnam were unable to defeat the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. North Vietnamese troops marched into Saigon on Apr. 30, 1975. More than 50,000 US troops were killed. That's defeat my friend. Americans seem to have very short memories - most probably thanks to indoctrination by US state television, too much junk food and too much shlte telly like the Simpsons and Frasier - camp b0ll0cks. Granted the US is an economic superpower, what with Ford, Kodak, Microsoft and other excellent contributions to wider humanity and it is potentially the mightiest superpower that ever existed. But 'superpower' implies a country that doesn't lose wars it doesn't even need to fight to crappy little countries, not having a president who's a complete buffoon, not staging moon landings, and not electing governments that destroy the WTC and kill 3000 of its own people in order to create a false climate of fear and terrorism. All that said, the US is my favorite holiday destination and a country I look up to in many ways. America empowers individual excellence and that goes down very well with me.

I couldn't give two hoots about Canada, but Britain does not have a socialist-style government. The Margaret Thatcher administration was one of the most Right Wing governments ever seen in a civilized country. We WON a war against a fascist Argentinian regime as well. Argentina is a big country in South America, folks. The present-day government is solidly centrist. Low interest rates and low unemployment is not generally indicative of a socialist style government. It's a capitalist democracy, but of course not unregulated. That's another sore point I have about you Yankydoodledandies - the dreamy belief in small government. Total twits. We even invented Capitalism. Don't give me the usual twaddle about how the bloody Greeks and Romans invented Capitalism. Capitalism proper began with the Industrial Revolution in Manchester, Liverpool and London.
And I suggest that Americans, Canadians and Brits alike come to Korea for the same motivations....easy money in my case, profiting from demand for my country's language. Had English culture and language not spread to all 4 corners of the globe, I wouldn't be able to do it. And neither would any of us. Just be jolly thankful for the opportunities being a descendant of Mother England brings.

I've no beef with Spanish and Portuguese culture at all. They've much to offer. But the descendants of Iberian culture and language are poor countries (that's another problem with the US - if it were really such a superpower, why bother crushing socialist uprisings in insignificant little Central American countries?) , whereas the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and present-day Britain have it pretty good. |
