I was around in '02 (don't you hate it when someone says that?) and got concerned enough to go to the local US base and ask about evacuation plans for civilians. Yes, they have them. I felt a certain comfort in that.

I was always curious what other nationalities planned to do. I did volunteer to take my co-workers' bank books out for them.

Being technically British I've often wondered that, if the brown stuff hit the fan, would I have better luck pleading for evacuation at the gates of the American embassy or the British one?

I suspect the Yanks have a more well-oiled machine in this regard.

The Brits might ask you to remember the Dunkirk Spirit and find a boat round Incheon somewhere.

If I turn out to be really, horribly wrong in my assumption that the North will never attack the South (as they would lose their one-and-only ally--China--who'd prefer trade with wealthy places like North America & Europe over 20 million half starved North Koreans)...

...then I'll scoot over to the US military base. That failing, I'll sit back and be grateful that I don't have to finish paying of those &^$^&% student loans. Cool

that's a good strategy. head to the one place they're least likely to hit - the place where their missles are aimed. Wink

Go west young man!

Lots of funny replies, but if it really all went down, what would I do?

First, I would head to the local Korean base, on which I taught some of the officers English to get stocked up on arms, ammo and other supplies. Then, pack up everything I think I need from home and head for the hills to dig in and try to ride it out.

The roads will be completely clogged with cars; more people will probably be killed in ensuing traffic accidents than in the fight! Going South just isn't an option from where I am. The local US base is now gone - they left town earlier this year - so that isn't an option. Count on the ROK to defend the city? No way.

Head for the hills to the East, loot a couple of supermarkets on the way out of town, and move East by night. I don't think I would jump directly into the fight. They have an army for the frontline stuff. I would just try to hold my own, get the family safe and keep it that way until the end.

We lads down in the south should be fine. If they make it to the Chollas it would be "game over" to quote a favourite phrase of Middle School kids. I think I'd check into the lovely Hotel Tyrol at the Muju ski resort, keep ordering drinks from the Bavarian-clad waitresses and put my feet up until the all-clear is given. Or if things are going badly for the South Korean defence, invite the Nork army reconnaisance unit in for a drink.
If I was feeling a bit more energetic, head south to Mokpo or some fishing port and pay a fisherman to take me to Jeju.

Get out of seoul, no.1.

However this could prove difficult as all approach roads in get detonated to staunch the advance of enemy tanks.

You've seen those thick blue "bridges" low over the road? They're jammed full of explosive.

Best way would be to have a NK flag and "I love Kim Jong Il" T-shirt ready to change into.
