I was teaching the teachers one day and the topic of sick days came up (I think we were discussing how it is more important to be at work than to do anything in Korea). I asked the youngest teacher how many sick days she'd taken and she said "I've been teaching for one year and I've taken one sick day" and it sucked the air out of the room.
Ajumma teacher 1 "I've been teaching for 13 years and I've taken one sick day."
Ajumma teacher 2 "I've been teaching for 12 years and I've never taken a sick day."
Ajumma teacher 3 "I've been teaching for 10 years and I've never taken a sick day."
So I asked them what they did when they were sick. Answer: show a movie. It is more important to be there than to do anything and I'm convinced that is why they get so pissed when you call in sick. |
That's true, they rarely take a sick day. But, in addition to having 3 months vacation, the Korean teachers get all that other time off too. The more years you've been teaching, the more days you can get off. So, you will see the teachers at your school leaving at 1pm or 2pm quite often. You will see the older guys doing it very often. They just sign the book and out they go. We don't get those days, so argue that next time someone biaches about you taking a sick day. |
