I think he did a fine job and props for not having his hand out. I'm sure his students will remember this for the rest of their lives.

I wouldn't say 'arseholes crapping on me' - I can understand why some people might take such a position. I just think it's unfortunate that some teachers feel they have to take such a mercenary position with regard to education here. I can understand how Korea could do that to some people, however, given that many Korean 'educators' care only about making profits themselves, and wouldn't think twice of screwing over a foreigner and then dumping him like a sack of shit. Believe me, if it were my school district and not my school asking me to take a group of district kids, rather than my own students, on such a trip I'd tell them either to shove it up their asses or shovel a huge, huge sum of money at me up front. Most likely I'd just tell them to shove it.

I do really appreciate being at a school where I feel valued and I'm happy to go the extra mile when so many people at my school go the extra mile for me.

Great post, thanks for taking the time to relate it all.

Just a query- do you plan to do anything related to the trip when the girls are back at school? i.e writing about their trip or presenting something in class about their summer holidays.
How do you think the kids who didn't go on the trip will react? Not bothered/really interested/slightly jealous etc?
Or once the trip's over it's over?

YBS, did the students pay some rent to your sister for the use of her place?

We didn't pay rent. We gave my sister $200 to cover some food we consumed and since we had a bit left in our budget at the end of the week, left another $200 for a wedding present, as she was getting married three weeks after we left. I also helped build her a fence and do some yard-work and stuff after the students left when I had some free time.

My sister and I have always been quite good about helping each other out, and like me, she enjoys working with young people and playing host. She was also kind of keen to meet my students and see whom I get to work with, as I had been away for so long, and she really seemed to enjoy me bringing so much of Korea back with me. I think bringing the group home with me made it a much more rewarding experience for my family and friends, as well.

I had my first classes Thurday and Friday of this week and had the students from those classes who had gone on the trip come to the front and help describe and explain a bunch of photos I showed on the classroom monitor. The rest of the students who didn't go on the trip seemed really interested. Probably a few were a bit jealous, but I think everyone was happy to see what we did, and really curious about where I come from.
