To the OP,

The precise cause of nocturnal leg cramps is usually unknown, however low levels of certain minerals (potassium for example) is known to be a contributing factor as is prolonged sitting.

Bananas contain potassium, so they may well help (if they're eaten that is...)

I'll agree with that bit about low potassium levels contributing to leg cramping, but that's b/c potassium depletion occurs as a result of sweating and extreme physical exertion.

"Prolonged sitting", therefore, has nothing to do with cramping. What you're talking about are blood clots which are another problem that are not related to cramping but rather long periods of sitting.

The only times I've ever had nighttime leg cramps in my calf muscle was when I was engaged in periods of extreme physical exertion and workouts, e.g, when I played football, went backpacking, climbed a mountain, was doing Army training, the night after a mini-marathon, etc.
