ASSumptions. Stupid comments. Why bother?

While news, I think it a stretch to call it "good" news, except in the sense it is not Rumsfeld.

Again, why be an ass?

Pot, kettle.

Really? Where is my pot in this particular kettle? Foolish.

Further assumptions? Anyone who reads posts on a BBS as you described above has a serious issue with understanding the nature of a BBS. And human beings. Or are you simply not mature enough to deal with conversations on a topic-by-topic basis?

I submit that there is no one who could be nominated that you wouldn't have complaints about.

And that's a bad thing? Gee, where is the Perfect Nominee Factory?

If you're going to pick a fight, why not pick one over something of some use and relevance? My posting style is not relevant. And if you read back through the thead, it is gopher and you who have attacked. I have only responded. And in fairly measured fashion, I should say.

Sounds like EFL would have preferred Rumsfeld.
Is there anyone, aside from Noam Chomsky, who he would find acceptable?

Did that comment set you off? good.

Anyone think Gates wasn't a good choice? One of the few bright spots of the Bush Administration. Speculation he might stay on for the next administration, regardless of who wins in November. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him continue in his present position beyond 1/20/09.

Sounds like welcome speculation to me. Where did you hear this?

It was in a few news articles I read at the beginning of the summer. Don't recall exactly where, so just googled it (robert gates barrack obama) and found these ones:

Times of London article

Dallas Morning News

In the latter article, Gates pretty much rules it out.

Actually, I recall hearing him talk about this months ago, now that I think about it. He said he has learned never to say never.

I think it important to keep in mind that he only returned to public service out of (a) loyalty to the country, especially in time of war, and (b) loyalty to the Bush Family -- and in this case B also had to appeal to A to get him back.

No matter what happens, I think we can also count on Gates's professionalism and cooperation with whomever succeeds him at the Pentagon during the transition this winter.
