I was merely using the American army as a comparison. People I knew in the American army seemed to make the upper NCO ranks in 10 years. I was wondering why promotion seemed so much slower in the Canadian forces. Also, Americans seem to be able to muster out earlier and enjoy good benefits. The small size of the Canadian army, the longer term required for benefits, the general job market, etc. I imagine all mean people tend to stay put longer, hence chances for promotion are less. |
I believe the American military has more ranks for non-commissioned officers (enlisted), which is why they get promoted more. It also depends on your trade. If you're in a 'hard' trade (infantry, artillery, boatswain, etc.), there are more opportunities for promotion, but the jobs are more difficult and the skills of your trade are less valuable on civilian street.
As well, even if you're in the same rank for a long time, there are different pay levels. For example, I believe a Corporal has 4 pay levels, and a Captain has 10 (by the way, someone said that Major is the 'default' rank that officers make it to by serving time alone, but there are many career Captains.) |

CF Pay Scales
| Quote: |
Presently, the salary range is roughly as follows for most jobs:
Regular Force (Full Time Employment)
Officer: Start: $42K/yr After 5 Yrs: $66K/yr
Non-commissioned member: Start: $30K/yr After 5 Yrs: $50K/yr
Your pay in the Canadian Forces is based on your occupation and rank. All service personnel, men and women, married or single, are paid on the same scale.
Your pay will automatically be deposited into your bank account of a financial institution of your choice, on the 15th and the last day of each month.
The usual deductions will be made for income taxes, Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Superannuation (the Forces Pension). |
