While I am not a purist, it is really more a matter of lifestyle nowadays.
After almost 14 years of living in different countries I have mountains of photos - sitting in a box in a garage in America somewhere. Too much to move around. Way too much. So, I don't get to enjoy them.
Currently, however, I keep a home in one country, but work in Korea. No problem, when I came here I brought a zip disk with me and can enjoy my digital pictures as my desktop shot everyday. And I do change the desktop almost everyday.
Photos also have the problem that development can be quite poor in some countries. Not something that you'll notice immediately, but the photo will deteriorate over time. Vs. digital won't.
If I was wealthy and could afford to haul my photos around - I still wouldn't. How often do you dig into the big box stored at the bottom of the closet to look at them.
I tend to keep a lot of shots in the free yahoo briefcase - which even has a slideshow function. That and you can, of course, open as many of those as you want. Of, as someone else mentioned - CD's.
For sheer enjoyment and frequent appreciation - just my opinion - go digital.
You should see my shots of the Bear Den Bar! Yeee Hawwww. |

Though this discussion mirrors the ones found in recording studios 10 years ago, when the world went from recording on tape to recording digital. Purists insisted that recording to tape was "warmer", and that the effect of "tape compression" was desirable, particularly when recording drums. Basically, they like the "effect" of analog recording, and miss the absence of that effect in digital, which was tagged "cold".
|
Off topic, but as an over 30 musician I watched this debate unfold from the inside. Now things have progressed to the point where digital technology can basically imitate the analogue effects that purists desire while retaining the enormous editing flexibility. Has this happened in the camera world? Curious. |

I think that they are getting close to the point where digital is at the same level as film. THe lastest canon digital slr 11 or 12 mega pixels.
at the 6 mega pixel level a digi cam can produce an a4 size picture with the same clearity as a film slr. I think for most amatuer photographers a 12 mega pixel camera is good enough.
In a couple of years digital will be as good as 35mm film and then it will start to try and replace medium format cameras. |

Will movies eventually be all digital, no physical film at all? |

For home and low-budget film, DV is taking over. Lucas shot chunks of Episode II digitally and Jackass (yeah, yeah - I know) used DV for everything but the opening sequence.
I just moved from still digital still 2.3mp to a Canon MiniDV cam. I've done a lot with digital photography and am now interested in learning the ins and outs of digital video. The first drawbacks I've hit are lower resolution when capturing still frames, and the need for a MUCH bigger hard drive. (A 60-minute MiniDV tape requires 11 gigs of space to download the whole thing.) |

just to let you all know i took the wide easy path and settled on a sony 3.2mp dsc-p8 digitalcam.
I AM SO LAZY!!!!!, instead of doing a bit of research and hanging back till i had sorted what i really needed, i just rocked into the nearest LG shop on the day i was paid and, saw some funky looking cams, and just laid 520 000 on the table and said " ill take that one". but its all good because this camers kicks butt!, it takes these cheesy videos (with surprisingly good sound), and so far the pictures seem all good but im yet to develop any so ill have to wait to see how they turn out.
im a rank amateur photographer so im sure that this puppy is gonna meet ll of my needs. its really cool to see the pice straight after taking them as well. |

You have chosen... wisely.
Improve upon your wisdom by picking up a 128MB memory card. |

Images from those Sony cameras look really good - no doubt they're great cameras. I just find they look so *goofy*... to me, very Fisher-Price. Maybe it's the lens over to one side that bothers me. |

excuse me if i sound like a dumbass but thereason im asking about digi or slr is because last week i forked out a considerable amount on a korean mp3 which my korean mate who knows a fair bit about audio was adamant i should buy. being a first timer 2 mp3 i took it, got to the local pc bang to discover that theres a bit more to downloading sounds than just plugging in and clicking away. ill get the hang of it but its gonna take a lil while too sus it all out.
so my question is really, how hard is it to get pics from digi cams developed, as i said im a rank amatuer photographer and not really wanting to get into all the technical side of taking class pics. obviously with slr you just click and drop your roll off to be developed, is the process as simple with digi cams or is there a bit more computery technical knowhow skills involved?, cheers |
It all depends, you can drop off your disc with the pictures the same way as you would your film.
Downloading pictures from the camera is easy, however I've only had experiene with Pentax and Canon. All you have to do it plug in the USB to your computer and connect it to the camera, turn the camera on and select the file you want to download them to.
There are a few sites where you can order your pictures, it's much cheaper than printing at home or taking to a photo shop. |

Digital cameras are fantastic. Granted a good 35mm camera may be better, but with a digi you can see pictures instantly, and erase them too. And yes, I have printed them for 250 won each from my local fuji place.
Currently I have a cheap Kenox that I paid 218,000 for, and it takes very good pictures. I had a fuji, and that was fantastic, but it got stolen along with my laptop when I had a robbery. (now I have a "new" used laptop and a Kenox, but they are fine). If you just want to take a zillion good pictures, get a digital. You will be happy. You will save money on film and developing. You can email your photos to family and friends, and put them on CD. Just find one with English. Cameras are expensive in Korea. You can always have someone in the USA mail you one. WIth postage and insurance that will still be cheaper then getting one here. |
