You realise that wasnt really him eh..lot of anger there
anyway, Beckham is a still what he always was a decent to good player with a lot of marketing clout. I think he could have played for a club in the champions league as he specialised in something valuable. He would however be probably played in rotation depending on the opponent. I wouldnt trust him to handle a good attacking winger or full back for instance. I hope he does well in the States and someone convinces Posh to eat something before she falls over. |

He will be helpful for the league, and all North American soccer leagues, unless he sucks up the scene right away... |
While I've heard the assessment that soccer is the most-played sport by kids in North America I haven't come across anything that suggests that those kids are the demographic most likely to attend matches. Playing soccer and watching matches are two entirely different things. I can only speak from personal experience, but I think there have only been half a dozen soccer players that I've met who also watch league games. And they were all university students. Not that my own region is necessarily indicative for all of the U.S. and Canada, but the overall point is still valid.
Beckham is coming to America to play for the LA Galaxy. This will no doubt boost the attendance figures for any Galaxy game. But will it actually get more people to attend the stereotypical Real Salt Lake vs. Colorado Rockies snooze-fest? Beckham will get people out in the stands, but even if other stars come to the league I don't think they'll have the same drawing power. Would the average youth soccer player in the U.S. or Canada recognize many other international players that would fit the budget requirements of the MLS? For example, when Hristo Stoitchkov played for the Chicago Fire I thought it was fantastic. Does the 12 year old down the street know who Hristo Stoitchkov is? Maybe, but more likely they don't.
Similarly, will anything happen to encourage people to go to American/Canadian league games that AREN'T Major League Soccer matches? Will David Beckham and a couple of other stars boost attendance in the USL First and Second Divisions or Premier Development League? My guess would be no. Money will be concentrated where it makes the most sense -- promoting MLS games while ignoring the lower levels. The lower levels in the U.S. and Canada are like bāstard step-children. They exist, but you shouldn't talk about them if you can avoid it. And certainly not around polite company. MLS is run on its own, the lower levels are run through USL. Beckham will most likely not do anything for non-MLS leagues in North America. But that's just my cynical side talking ... |

Ha, so that's why they can afford to pay him 50 million a year: the team is sponsored by what some critics would call a 'pyramid scheme'. |
