me too, I"m not the most social person and generally do good in smaller groups.

Anyhow lots of people coming will be both good and bad. too many cooks spoil the broth... conflicting advice opinions etc. Additionally when there are more people decision making will turn into a committee and group concensus always takes longer and usually achieves less.

My suggestion if all the forum geeks want to get together is that 1-2 people help out yesterday and the rest agree to meet later in the day for geek browsing and/or coffee/beer later.

But of course the final decision should be Yesterdays since he's the one getting the new system.

Right. Good thoughts.

Hey,

So is Corsair RAM of good enough quality to bring with me from Canada, and save myself the headache of being stuck with crap RAM when I build my computer in Seoul? Since canada computers (one of the cheapest for components I've found) has it on sale this week

Cheers

I opted for a pretty laptop that runs on Vista and only a 128MB NVIDIA Graphics Card (It's up to 512MB now, right?). Versus an ugly and bulky one running XP and a proper graphics card that can run all the newest games. What can I say ... I'm a girl afterall and I figure the gaming would only be a fallback if the boonies are indeed hell. I figured I can set-up a decent desktop there for relatively low price if it comes down to it.

It looks like you guys are all building your own - my question: is it cheaper to build from scratch over in SK or buy something on sale and replace things. I'm from the States and finding sales and replacing components is the way to go here. Saves so much money if you know what you want already. Is it the same there or are there not many sales on anything relatively new?

Don't see many sales here per say but, prices aren't too bad here for most things and they are always going down. Seems like everything you buy is cheaper two or three months later. If you're coming from N. America and plan to build a com here I suggest bringing some RAM (Corsair and Kingston isn't really available here) and a perhaps a video card if you find a good deal. You can compare the prices here with home at www.danawa.com.

Just looking for some advice and different thoughts from people who know about computers.....

If I were to have a computer built for me - but didn't know much about computers -but I want to have the BEST computer....

and if I had 1 million to spend on having it built (just the CPU - forget about the monitor, keyboard, mouse etc etc).... only talking about the actual CPU itself....

and if I wanted the computer to be built with the best speed - for games...

and also the best graphics and sound card for games and movies...

but also the best memory for storage of movies, games, pictures, documents... etc

what would I ask for - when I tell the specifications on what I want in the computer when I have it built....?

can anyone offer advice to me - so I can just walk into the shop and say to the computer-builder-guy - "I want a computer built and I want to to have this, and this, and this, and this, and this.... (etc)

Frankly, for a million won, you won't get what you're after. The lists above are pretty comprehensive, and pretty much sum up what a million will get you, but don't be fooled; this is all still pretty much mainstream, not enthusiast.

While the price of computers has dropped, this isn't the case, and never will be, for enthusiast hardware.

The top Intel CPU will see you 1,000, 000 lighter, while the third best will cost you about 500,000. RAM is the same; if you want good RAM, you won't be buying it in Korea. Korea makes RAM, and buying anything other than stuff that is based on the homegrown chips is really hard. You will want to order that from the US online. Top-end will cost you about 400,000 for 1GB.

Graphics? Sure, a GF 7600 is a nice card, but it's not only a generation behind, it's even the middle of that line. Truly top end will set you back 650,000; 500,000 for the vanilla of the 8xxx series.

HDD: Western digital or Maxtor, SATA 2, 10,000 RPM, 16MB cache; probably around 250,000 for a 150GB drive. Think Raptor. Not much storage space, but that's the best.

Bottom line: People who talk about wanting the best have no idea what that means. Ask the beaver what it means; dropping a bombload of cash, but getting something that is well and truly the best system, and an extremely future-proof one at that.

He went with a server board, 2 CPUs, which still to this day lays waste to any CoreDuo CPU setup. With a BIOS flash, he will be able to drop 2 dual-core CPUs in there, giving him a quad core setup, but having the two separate CPUs, the system will undoubtedly beat a quad-core setup for a while to come. He will, in the end, have bought a computer that will have been top shelf for about 4 or 5 years.

Sorry to be a party-pooper, but what you will finally get will not be in line with what you want if you only have a million to spend. Double that, and then you will be getting close.

BTW...yesterday...I think we live in the same neighborhood. If you want a hand putting this thing together, I would be happy to help.

Demo, I've been lurking this part of the forum for a few months and you definitely seem to know your stuff. Some other people haven't been able to tell me what I might be able to find here, but I was wondering if you might have a little input.

I'm wanting to get a system going here with a 2.5mil budget set for high performance gaming. That's not counting monitor/mouse/keyboard. What am I looking at with this kind of budget?

Right now, I'm worried that just going to Technomart or Yongsan will net me a computer that wasn't put together correctly for compatibility or that will develop devastating future problems like heat issues. If you could offer some advice, that would be great. I realize you're probably a busy person, too, so if you or anyone else on this forum can recommend a reliable techie I can call on that'd be helpful too.

For all that I've poked around on computers for I don't know how many years, I'm still a complete idiot when it comes to hardware. =/

Thanks.

I know you asked for demo's advice specifically, which is a good idea. You should also make sure you ask Cuban Lord for his ideas, he's really into buying top dollar stuff.

Here's what I'd look at, prices estimated as I'm a bit too lazy to look up exact prices:

MB: ASUS Maximus Special Edition - 325,000 (comes with water cooling if I'm not mistaken)
CPU: Intel C2D E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz - 350,000
RAM: OCZ Titanium PC2-6400 (2x2GB) - 100,000
VGA: HIS Radeon HD 3870x2 - 450,000
HDD1: Raptor 150GB - 175,000
HDD2: Raptor 150GB - 175,000 (For RAID 0 or 5, can't remember which)
HDD3: Seagate 1TB 7200.11/32MB) - 290,000
ODD1: Samsung DVD-Multi - 30,000
ODD2: Samsung DVD-Multi - 30,000
Case: Antec 900/P182 - 170,000
Power: Zalman ZM850-HP - 185,000
OS: Vista Ultimate 64-bit - 200,000

Total: 2,480,000

That's a DDR2 memory-based system. If you want DDR3, that'd be a lot more, or you'd have to sacrifice in the storage section. Also, I've heard that in may the Intel Q6700 is gonna drop in price by almost half, so that would be a nice buy then.

Good luck, I would love to be able to have permission to spend this much on a computer!

Good response. I put that in just so you and Super Hero could have another laugh.

When superhero laughs it's hypocritical. If he wore tight pants (heaven forbid) his pantyline would make yours masculine by comparison.

That's a scary thought.

The thing is, I'm looking at that list I typed, it would be gross overkill for what I do. I'm just not that into anything that demanding. Though I may have to talk to Super Hero about video editing and video cameras for my little one coming soon. Gotta take lots of vids for the parents and family back home.

Two and a half big ones!! Now that's a budget!!

CPU and RAM choice will kind of depend on if you'll be overclocking or not. Cheaper chips can out-perform expensive ones if you OC.

A Q6600 OC'd would be good and only 255,000.

Some articles I've been reading recently have made a convincing point that 4GB in Vista x64 isn't really worth it. Something to do with the way the paging-file system works. To prevent your system from using the HDD as virtual RAM (slows things down) you should have 8GB in x64 Vista. With RAM being so cheap, and your budget huge, I would go for 4x2GB's.

8 gigs of DDR3 RAM will be insanely expensive......but, luckily, good DDR2 RAM is only slighly slower than DDR3 at the moment.

2 graphics cards in crossfire or SLI mode would be great but can be problematic........easier to just get an HD3870 X2. Only 450,000 and the best single-card solution out there.

Wow, thanks guys. I didn't expect so much help so soon.

I can find all of this hardware here in Korea? Do they charge some kind of tax/tariff for important RAM?
