| I would disagree that conscription is a form of slavery. Yes, you are forcing people to fight for something that they may or may not believe in and that could be constued as slavery because they don't have a choice, but I think what most of us are saying by "universal service" isn't entirely military. That would be one option, of course, and where most of the people would go, but what about an alternative term of service where instead of going to the army for 2 years, you could go to something like the peace corps or ameri-corps and fill your service that way. I think the time frame would have to be longer, say 4 or 5 years instead of 2 just to keep enlistment up, but I don't think that there would be anything wrong with every single person in this country learning what a hard days work is about. Wouldn't it just make your day to see Paris Hilton living in a mud shack in El Salvador helping build a school for an underprivelaged community? Forced to do it on unbreachable terms for a predetermined period of time. I think it would help unite the classes in a common struggle. You have millionaire's sons working side by side with welfare babies. It would be educational and enlightening as well as add the common element of risk in any military conflict like I mentioned above. |
