I've been pondering the same thing at my job, as I make more than most of the staff there. However, I suspect our circumstances are different, so my ideas are probably moot for you.

I do appreciate the helpful advice from you and others. The fact is, though, I'm not personally in a no-raise situation right now. I have been in the past several times, but this thread isn't about a situation *I'm* currently facing. I only started this after reading the "Would you take a pay cut?" thread over in Job-related. It got me to thinking.

Most round-eyes (as in 'just about every damn one of us') living & working on the RoK come to the Salary Re-nego Battlefield totally unaided and unarmed except for our own wits, experience and charm. Unfortunately, we just don't have the luxury of sending in the slickest, trickiest professional negotiators that union dues can buy -- the scary dudes that Koreans sic on their employers to extract the maximum possible benefits.

Just thought it might be interesting and possibly useful to consider the big "what if" and toss around some ideas & counter-demands someone may consider should they be offered the goose egg. And from the comments so far, it seems a fairly common "what if".

In lieu of giving you a pay raise? Alright, I'll go along with that. But how about the corollary? Say I'll give you 3.5% right off the top, but for another 3.5 your job title becomes 'Monkey-Boy' on namecards and all company correspondence. And for an additional 3% you come to work in clown makeup. Bonuses paid for silly walks!

Hell's no!

You've got to think of a) how cool the job title looks on your name card and b) how it plays on a CV

1996-1998 Junior Schmuck
straight out of school, I had to make photocopies for the guy who made the coffee
1998-1999 Office Bitch
After hard graft and proving myself, was allowed limited toilet privileges
1999-2000 Email Monitor

and so it goes until
2007-present
Grand Technical Wizard
Following triumphant tour of Mozambique on .NET powered tricopter, was granted key to the Capital city and given promotion
