I remember specifically that the culture is free of sexual abuse of children.
I can't list every culture in the world, but I can give a sample which will indicate that the cultures which are most permissive of nudity among children and most permissive of cross-gender relationships among children are those cultures which have the least sexual abuse of children.

It has been generalized that every society wears some sort of clothing or ornamentation.
However, I remember from anthropology class that the Siriono tribe of Bolivia does not go for either.

Strangely enough, Evolution. It's by Stephen Baxter.
Some of the ideas posted could be contributing factors (migration, social status) but what I'm curious about is, when people start wearing clothes, do they start by covering their genitals? It would seem that in times when language was rudimentary, people would still be relying on cues like male ornamentation to mate. In covering those bits they would be cutting out that cue which seems counter-productive, except as a cheater strategy.

Men tend to think of clothes as purely functional, a way to survive and, thinking of people like North Sea fishermen, that's true, but still exaggerated. People can withstand greater extremes of temperature than we think. The real purpose of clothes is to display status and attract the opposite sex, like plumage.
Rather than evolving cumbersome sets of tail feathers like the peacock, we have evolved civilisation as a means of producing ever nicer and nicer clothes. The move from animal skins to cotton or wool meant settled agriculture. The demand for silk led to world exploration. The industrial revolution started with textile manufacture. All thanks to a basic competitive evolutionary drive to please women.
Basically, without women men would run around naked. |

It's true. Just watch '300' if you don't believe. |
