you should read Generation Ecstasy: Into the World of Techno and Rave Culture by Simon Reynolds. he describes some of the legendary British raves from years ago, like some sprialtribe events that were just nuts - fully illegal parties with 1000's of people out in the country. i think his perspective is sometimes a bit hokey, but its wonderful to read about the amazing parties of a bygone era.
also worthy of a read is Techno Rebels by Dan Sicko. its an excellent history of detroit techno and how it developed. has interviews w/ all the heavyweights of detroit like derrick may, kevin saunderson, juan atkins, richie hawtin, dan bell, jeff mills, etc. |

| What do you think would be the visa implications of DJ-ing out there while I was teaching? Reading these posts makes me wanna break out my turntables again. |

Obviously without getting too specific, I am curious about the kinds of situations that led some of you guys to be able to find Club Candy and feel comfortable enough to take the risk of acquiring it? I here some bad stories about the consequences of pilling in Seoul i.e. Police are vigilant and yo don't get just deported or a slap on the wrist if you are caught even with some in your bloodstream via a urine sample.
Some of you talk like it is no big deal in Korea and yet others who were die hard pill poppers back home suddenly go cold turkey in Korea due to Police paranoia. If it is so dangerous then I imagine one would never ask for it - do you just wait around until you are solicited or offered by someone you have seen around enough to trust and believe is not a narc? |

I would also like to say that the Club / Rave distinction is not nearly that clean cut at the top end IMO. At your avreage affair, yeah, the "ambience" can make a huge differnce and the whole ditinctions seems important. But when you are flying on pure chemical sweetness being piloted by the "DJ to the Gods" and surrounded by a see of beautiful, smiling, friendly fellow passengers all ready to blast off with you it really doesn't matter if you are in a field, club, gymnasium, mud hut, whatever... At that point it is just the drugs, the musicm, the DJ, and whichever lovely lady you are smiling at at the time Everything else suddenly seems pretty insignificant IMO. |

since there's a lot of nostalgia going down in this thread...
best rave i ever went to was in 1993. I was 15. Everyone there told me that 'it' was almost finished, and that 'it' was better in '92.
Have been to no 'raves' here but have still had some of the best nights of my life. |

Sinse I'm sure it would be a "cash gig" I can't see a visa problem. However, being a waeguk, getting the chance to spin at a decent club would be your main problem. Not impossible if you buddy up to the right people and impress with your personality/knowledge/platters.
I saw Derrick May in a 200max club in AWellington called "Studio 9" in 96. Best night in an actual clubbing situation. You have a big black man with no shirt on, literally sweating onto the turn-tables, spinning what they call Detroit Techno but it was all highly funk-oriented so it felt closer to house but with the electronic grunt of techno, dropping in new cuts every minute or so, all seemless, always pumping you up to a new level, for four solid hours, just perfect.
As for disco biscuits, I haven't a clue but would love to know, can't even find any electric jazz cigarettes. PM if you're down. |

Seoul has TOTALLY changed since this thread started. Wow...back then the only clubs were small, dank basement dives in Hongdae. M2, Circle, Volume, Eden, Answer, Heaven, Ellui...look how far this city has come in such a short time. |

venues don't make the scene. people do..
just go to one of those venues on any given weekend, after a couple drinks you wouldn't know which one you were in as they are all the same. |

Agreed. The scene was so much better back in the days of the small basement clubs. Less pretentiousness, less cost, and a less commercial brand of music. Ah bogoshipuh. |

Fair enough.
Seoul's nightlife infrastructure has certainly overdeveloped on an almost non-existent nightlife culture...think of it as a lanky freshmen center who needs a few years to fill out before he's ready for the NBA. He's got the framework and the basic skill sets...just needs a while before'll get there.
Other cities have been doing it for decades...it's all new here, and it's really exciting to be a part of it.
There are loads of people doing good work in the scene, developing pockets of unique and interesting promotion. Yeah, at the big rooms it's all pretty standard stuff but still...you can't argue with the physical transformation the city has undergone. |

Any big names coming to seoul soon? Maybe they don't have to be big but just legitimate.
I'm sort of itching to just go and have fun enjoying the scene with some good music. I'm sick of the pretentious people going to the newer clubs 'hanging out' with some pretty crappy music. |
