TECO,
Actually I'll be here until Monday night. I was roughly planning a night out in 'the zone' on Sunday night as I heard that all the Filipinas who live and work in Taipei head over there as its their day off, and things are pretty fun and wild or whatever. Maybe we could meet up in the Zone? You name the bar, I'm sure I could find it there..
Okay, for the update..
Yesterday was a Holiday, so apparently everyone stays home and barbeques and looks at the moon or something like that.. (some kind of moon holiday).. but the moon wasn't out.. anyhow..
I started out on the Bar-hopping.. incidently, as I was walking to this one particular area.. I was looking at the map inside of my Lonely Planet. One Taiwanese guy turned and just stared at me. I could feel like I was in Korea, and started to get pissed that he was just staring. Actually, oddly he was waiting for me to say 'where is' or something, so then he proceeded to ask me where I was going. His English was amazing, and kind of funny.. instantly relaxed.. its kind of like being in Thailand here, in that Taiwanese people are quite relaxed and have some pretty good social skills. That was the first time I got one of those strange stares, and he stared at me not because I was a foreigner, but because I had that lost look, anyhow, nice.
I hit some bars called Spin, 45, and a couple others in that area.. they had great music.. and the bars and Spin which was a club, had amazing music. Even though I've become accustomed to bars in Korea, these ones felt like they were upped up a step, better music, I heard alot of stuff I just haven't heard in a long time, or stuff I've never heard before but wish I would have.
After that area, I went to Carnegies, but it was quite kind of quiet. Apparently thats one of the most popular bars in Taipei now. Apparently since it was a Holiday yesterday, it was the night before that was packed with a long line outside waiting to get in. Last night when I was there it was fairly quiet.
After that, I hit whats called 'the Zone' which has quite a few bars. Alot of Filipinas hangout there, and apparently Taiwan is even more popular than Hong Kong for Filipinas to work. I didn't quite get a feel for the place, only that its kind of like Itaewon but totally different. There are a few bars that are kind of like UN Club in Itaewon, but double the staff.. then there are alot of other bars that are just bars.. I'll have to explore more to figure that area out as well.
As far as Taichung goes, I might make a day trip and come back. I'm enjoying figuring Taipei nightlife out and where to go and such. Plus its the weekend plus Sunday is all the Filipinos night off of work and hitting the Zone.. so curious how crazy that gets as well. |

There are about 30,000 or so American soldiers positioned in Japan.
Big bases in Okinawa, Yokohama and Yokosuka. |

I heard there were many in Okinawa.. I just never heard of any in Fukuoka.. how many are there? Or do they just visit to party??
Yokohama is fairly close to Tokyo, Okinawa way in the southern islands far from everywhere.. where is Yokosuka near? |

There is a Navy base at Sasebo near Nagasaki. The action moves from there to Fukuoka on the weekends when the ships are in port or visiting.I myself dont have any problem with them but occassionally I geuss the foreigners living here do not like the competition. |

Nope.
I've never had any problems with the U.S. soldiers in Japan.
Contrary to what I've read and heard, they've always been really polite to servers in restaurants and friendly to talk to, etc.
See them in Rappongi once in a while.
As well, I've never had any problems with them in Itaewan either. |

I think Fukuoka is really nice. Clean. Relaxed even. Taipei is congested, crowded, not clean. I'd rather spend a few days in Fukuoka anytime. Cost is almost the same. Tehnagain perhaps you' d like to venture outside one city or the other, in which case I'm not qualified to say much, although outside Taipei Taiwan becomes a good bit different fast! |

I've yet to be in Fukuoka. Plan to go in the very near future.
(Been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Shimonseki and Hiroshima however). |

If you're an ESL teacher, then I think Fukuoka is the best place to teach.
If, however, you can teach in Spain, well, then Spain is the best.
Who doesn't like Spanish food, culture, and the girls? |

Okay, my post may sound weird and slightly biased, but I have yet to see a good argument against the virtues of Spain. |

Yeah, I hear ya BB. Actually the Fukuoka would just be for vacation. Although there is a chance that someday (after the Spain excursion), I'll have to come back to northeast Asia for the CASH!!
Osaka or possibly Fukuoka might be ideal for that time.. depending on how the impression/feeling of Fukuoka goes upon visiting - from what I hear, it should be good! |
