If you are going to make a big hoo-ha about the Nazis calling themself socialist, at least put in it into a historical context. After WW1, capitalism looked pretty dead in Germany which was on the brink of a revolution. Like many countries in Europe at that time, socialists and Marxists were gaining popularity and workers were actively campaigning for change. Any party that didn't call itself socialist wouldn't have stood a chance.
The main difference, of course, is that one party fed on German Nationalism, which had been increasingly anti-semitic (as well as homophobic, despite many of its members being in the closet) over the decades. Combined with militaristic oeuvres, it took power. Now, the question is which party is that more similar to in most countries, the left of the right? |
