If you hate it and really want to go, then give notice. Get your boss and his interpreter and try to work something out.

Good luck

Hey,

Like the guy in one of the responses said. Why don't you come to Seoul and visit on weekends? Also, I might suggest that rather than just hanging out on weekends you should take trips. I don't know if I can compete with the other guy's crappy neighborhood but I've been showing the people I've recruited around on weekends so one more would be welcome. Very Happy Cheer up man everyone here has their fair share of hating life in Korea (pushed on subway by ajumas, stares, squat toilets Evil or Very Mad ) but there is also lots to see and do if you get out there.(Mountains, markets, night life, non squat toilets Razz ) Like I said, you're welcome to join us on our weekends if you want.

I have a rule now that I am in Korea. DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU! Other teachers will lie and screw you and the owners will not be fair. Everytime I do that right thing, I burn for it. Think long and hard and decide if the owner would be fair to you...if you are not sure, then run.

You may already know this, but giving notice often backfires. You try to be nice and'do the right thing' or whatever. Then what often happens is a 'nice' boss determines you owe a thousand dollars for bs reasons.

I do not recommend either way. I say be wary. The apparently great boss will burn you under the cloak of 'business' Exclamation

Check this out. Recently said wonderful withheld close to a grand under said bs business nonsense. Oh, it is business, 500 bucks for gas/electricity, 300 because you stay in apt which cannot be rented anyway, 200 for phone though it was already paid for etc...

Good guy, yes. Business shark ripper off character, indeed. So I got 600 instead of 1600 because I was a fool and did not simply get paid and run!@!!!!

5 months in seems to be the 'hump time'

My advice is to avoid drinking get out and do some walking.

Yeah, just before the halfway point everything seems to be at their darkest. Not quite halfway through, seems like forever amd you need/want a change.

I too am out in the boonies and in the middle of Redneck country. Where I am there are basically two jobs, work for KIA motors of farm...seems like most people farm. Constant slack jawed staring from some of the locals.

The only thing that got me through the winter here was the weekends. Going into Suwon or Seoul to meet people and do things.

If you really have to leave try to give some notice. It sounds like they have been decent people. As you said yourself they may have a tough time finding someone to work out in the boonies and taking off on them could really hurt their business.

Things to consider. You are almost halfway through your contract. You would be giving up your year end bonus, airfare and you are almost halfway there.

I hear ya grotto.

My advice is do not trust a Korean boss. Period. When it comes to cash and receiving the correct pay, the Korean guy/gal boss has a different idea. Logic is Neptune. They steal, but you have little recourse. Yes it is 2005 but guess what, the racism is deep here and most hagwon jerks do not consider you, the whitie, as an actual person. I know this sounds awful but I believe it to be true. Said boss may be nice for many months. But when it comes to being decent and fair and money is on the line, the non-human waygook will get burned. Be careful.

I believe most of the hagwon boss people are as crooked as a 3 dollar bill.

In short, I have been burned more so than ever I burned anyone.

I know my hogwan has had a lot of runners but I think I'm the first to be decent about it and give 30 days notice. I think he knows that there are ways I could *beep* him too, so hopefully it won't come down to it.

I was facing this very same dilemma recently. I decided that since they had been good to me, I would take the chance and discuss it with them. However, I also knew that if it showed any signs of going south after THAT, I would feel alright fleeing since they already knew my intentions. SO, as it turned out they understood, and I'm scheduled to leave in 3 weeks! Woopee. Good luck to you my friend. Wink

Anyone notice that people still have things to say about it? Seems to be a recurring, if not endemic, situation.

Um...this IS racism here...these folks do not treat you the way they do because you are white or they are Korean, they do it because they are running a business and have the mistaken idea that this is the way to make money. Happens in every country, to every race of people, BY every race of people. YOU say don't trust your Korean boss to pay you fairly, *I* say don't trust ANY boss to pay you fairly...YOU say a Korean boss has a different idea about money than the workers, *I* say the boss has a different idea about money than the workers....

You are absolutely right that workers get skrood over...you are absolutely right that there are unethical business people that take advantage of trusting (naive) workers...I do not disagree with a single observation you have made UNTIL you make it about race.

I have been skrood over way more often by Americans than by Koreans. I do not hate Americans because of it (though I have a healthy dislike for business owners and administrators in general, but I have indeed met a few good ones along the way).

Baseline: PEOPLE are greedy, selfish, short-sighted, stupid, arrogant, inconsiderate, thoughtless, and usually only do what will reap them the most rewards with the least effort...when you meet people that aren't, cherish them, since they are in such short supply..

Racial problems certainly exist, but the money thing isn't one of 'em -- else, the Korean teachers at schools would get the same or MORE than the foreigners...money and greed trump race....

What mushroom patch did you wake up by? Koreans are racist. That is a statement of fact. As a society they are quite racist. They have made some improvements but they have a long long ways to go before they treat any foreigner as someone equal to a Korean.

Laughing it is still racism...white foreigners get more money in schools than the Koreans. Here is an eye opener for you. Some of the reasons the foreigner gets more money are: We are all college/university graduates(or should be), we are experts in English...well some more than others but we have lived and studied in an English environment most of our lives.

Often Korean bosses will screw over the foreigner because they know we are leaving the country and have little or no recourse to legal action.
