cool, thanks. I read somewhere that one of the big companies, UPS maybe, opened all of someone's documents and they had to re-send them with someone else- so hoping that doesn't happen

When do you know where you are placed? The same time you know you got accepted?

Hello everyone,

After reading some posts on this topic, I realized that EPIK might not be taking my application seriously. I applied for the August 2011 term directly with EPIK and I was applicant #2 since I applied early. I had all of my documents ready since I applied for the Spring 2011 term (I applied late and was offered a Daegu position which I refused). I mailed all required documents on time (late April) and I even completed an online TEFL course in January 2011. Recently, the EPIK coordinator told me that SMOE rejected my application. Even worse, I have not heard back yet regarding my other preference locations such as Incheon, Daejeon and Busan. First come first serve is obviously false advertisement and I am getting worried because these posts mention that positions have already been offered (Seoul and other provinces).

Anyone else in the same boat or have experience with this?

Did you have to do another interview for the August 2011 intake? When did EPIK receive all your paperwork? It's weird that they received all your paperwork very early but just told you that your documents were rejected :/

What is the reason for rejecting your documents? Maybe one of the documents you turned in was not valid

Yeah, I had to interview again with a different guy. They had 90% of my documents in their office since I applied for the March 2011 term. So I was good to go BEFORE April 1 2011.

I was told by my EPIK coordinator that SMOE might be looking for a higher gpa (mine was a 2.8 from a University of California) and more teaching experience (I only have 1-on-1 private tutoring experience). There is nothing wrong with the documents I mailed since they kept most of what I sent them when I applied for the March 2011 term. The last thing my EPIK coord. had me send is an Incheon Security Deposit Form for the housing situation (since I picked Incheon as my 2nd preference, Seoul as my first). Anyways, I just wish I could secure a position by now like everyone else. Thanks for reading.

What Uni did you graduate from? What was your major? did you go directly through EPIK? Sometimes that makes a difference if it's a less known Uni. When you say they kept most of what you sent, do you also mean your CBC because I know SMOE requires the CBC to be a after March one. People who had it done earlier had to request it again because SMOE would not accept it. The fact that you said no to Daegu also could have been a factor since they want people who are flexible. I'm not saying it's enough to be rejected but when you have so many applicants that are willing to say yes to anything, the no does stand out. This year, their are so many EPIK applicants it's become really competitive. I also had a 2.8-9 GPA but my interviewer didn't mention anything about my GPA being too low for SMOE :/ I did do a lot of work for non profit orgs. and was a professors assistant so i suppose that's one difference. However, it's quite impossible to figure out why provinces would reject certain applicants because people who have had lower than a 3.0 have gotten accepted to SMOE. It's still the early stages for getting NoA's and placements so don't worry too much! Sad Its sucks that you didn't get SMOE but hopefully you'll get other provinces since theirs still lots of positions left. Here's the link if you want to keep tabs on it Smile

thanks for the replies. to answer your question gogoma, i graduated from uc irvine as an econ major. the reason my gpa might be low is because i was a bio major for the first 3 years before i changed to econ. i went directly through epik, my cbc was done in dec/jan so i was told by an epik coordinator that i would only have to submit new applications without additional required documents. according to that spreadsheet link, there are so many seoul positions still available!!! give it to me EPIK!!!!! hahaha. bastards...

HA I graduated UCI in Business Econ. I'll be in Busan starting August (not through EPIK) so let me know where you end up. From my short experience with interviewing with hagwons and other public schools not under EPIK, they could careless about GPA's so maybe check those out if you don't get the Seoul job through EPIK that you want.

For anyone in Ireland that is sending documents to S. Korea read below:

I went to the Post Office on Tuesday to post of all my documents via courier. I was informed that they cannot send post via courier to S. Korea. I asked him to check again cos I had seen it on their website that they could. He checked again and said it was not an option.

The fact of the matter is that he was wrong and according to the GPO what most likely happened is he typed in Korea and N. Korea automatically comes up, which they don't have a courier service to. If he wanted S. Korea he would need to type in the Peoples Republic of Korea

So if anyone is sending documents via An Post and are informed it is not an option to send via courier insist that it is and get them to check specifically for South/Peoples Republic of Korea.

This little mistake may have cost me the job I wanted.

Thanks for the link!

Ugh... They're not accepting any more application forms?! Hopefully they mean the June 1st deadline... If not, then I have not yet sent in my paper application with the required documents! I'm still waiting for my CBC. Crying or Very sad

Good luck to everyone...

Seoul is my top choice as well. I mean, I was told I got accepted to Seoul by my recruiter, but don't they have to look at my documents to make a final decision?

I am so worried... My recruiter has yet to e-mail me back about my status...

Hi buddy,
I finally got word from my EPIK coordinator that I will be working in Incheon. I am so glad the wait is over and I'll also be very close to Seoul.
For everyone else who is still waiting for a response, just wait it out because from my experience (applied for spring 2011) they usually have a few spots open up last minute. It might not even start in Sept, but October because that's when the current teacher started his/her term. Keep your heads up! =)
