Anyways, as everyone knew back then, she's simply not good enough looking to make it to the big time, despite how great her voice is. |
Reminds me of what a music industry veteran said when Whitney first came out. Something to the effect of: Whitney has a great voice, but at every large black church, there probably is a singer or two who would blow her away. Susan Boyle is the exception that proves the rule. She never got discovered for all those years because she was not beautiful. It took a nation laughing at her before people realized how they were pre-judging her. Goes to show that in the music industry, looks are just as important as talent and sometimes more so. Even Paris Hilton had a hit record. Lemme say that again. . . Paris Hilton. |

Ella Fitzgerald was one unattractive looking heifer and black to boot during a racist time yet she rose to fame because of her AMAZING VOICE.
Easterners such as Koreans - and Western pop culture at times too is critiqued from within Western society - is said not to emphasize a distinction between appearance and reality, is more interested in face than truth, the icing rather than the cake.
Charice will be a star because of her voice. Of course there will be sugar topping too, with make-up and careful image development, but there's no mistaking what she's all about. |

| I guess I should say that in America most people don't think that Asians can sing as well as Charice does. She'd have to have sex appeal to break into the market, otherwise she's just a good voice and interesting youtube videos, but no MTV play. |

Ella Fitzgerald? From like 80 years ago? You can't seriously compare the music industry then and now. Hell, you can barely draw comparisons from the industry 30 years ago.
If you haven't seen this, you probably should:
It's called "Before the Music Dies" and it's a great documentary/exploration into the current state of the Western pop industry.

Charice is very, very talented, but that doesn't count for much these days. When an autotuned hack like Key$ha has the No.1 pop spot, I'd say your faith is very misplaced. |

She could not find work as a singer because of HOW SHE LOOKED. Marilyn Monroe (oh the irony!) had to threaten to boycott a top LA nightclub, saying she wouldn't play there if Ella couldn't, before Ella got the chance on the big stage.
My comments were about the superficial attention paid to how a singer looks rather than to the quality and beauty of their singing. THAT was a factor back then as it is now.
There is a lot of sugar coating going on these days and it's sure nice when when the icing is put on a substantial cake rather than a hollow shell. |

the music industry has gone in a seriously wrong direction.
The days of talented musicians with great talent are gone..
now if you dont look a certain way then forget it..
right up till the mid 90's music companies didnt care how you looked, as long as you could sing very well and were talented..
now they grab anyone off the street and filter their voice through so many computer programs you come out sounding like a pro!
this road will not last!
targeting 11 and 12 year olds is not the way to go! |

| I guess Super Junior would get their ass kicked by 3 midgets. But in the singing department, that's not hard either. |

I think something similar is true of the Philippines. Great singing and great singers are not unusual there. |
