I have concluded that Blair has serious problems with logic and the importance of facts. First he supported Bush's absurd war in Iraq. Now he's telling us that he believes in virgin births, god-men, angels, demons, transubstantiation, miracles, heaven, hell, pillars of smoke, talking snakes, that there are exactly three gods (not four or eighteen, but three!) etc...
Religious people should not be allowed to vote, never mind hold high office with control over war and peace. |

Oh really?
You mean things like this?
I'm not Irish. I said I have Irish ancestry.
The rest of your sad, angry drivel wasn't worth responding to, as it simply showed that you are wasting perfectly good oxygen. |

In Christopher Hitchens' book "God is Not Great," he told an anecdote about visiting Ireland. Some thugs stopped him at gunpoint and said "Are you a Protestant or a Catholic?" He said "Atheist." They said "Are you a Protestant atheist or a Catholic atheist?" |

Hehe....That's an old one back home.
For those who see Ireland and the Irish as some kind of Catholic bastion....think again. Church attendence numbers are steadily decreasing. On a Sunday in Ireland you'll see quite a lot of faithful over the age of 55....but of the younger generations still going to mass. Well, who's to say, but I know many, many, many young people in Ireland only go because of tradition. They don't have a faith.
I lived in Belfast until 2000, and of all my friends and family, about 5% went to mass. Not even all of those 5% would have actually claimed any kind of faith. |

Ah, Dave's. If you're not an atheist you should not hold public office and are retarded.
Don't you all ever get tired of preaching to the choir? Does it really make you feel good about yourself? |

Well. As an agnostic, I don't preach to anyone. I never interfere in anyone's spiritual belief. I don't stand on the street or in the pulpit and tell people what I believe. I don't bother anyone. I don't feel a smug self-assurance that I know what's best for you. I'll leave you alone.
Can you say the same about Christians? |

I wonder, are there any atheist choirs?
It's also a good thing that theists especially Christians would never prevent an atheist from voting or holding public office. |

Then my post was not directed at you.

Of course not. And there are many atheists who don't try to force their beliefs (or non-beliefs, as it were) on people. However, there are a sizable group of people on Dave's who do nothing but belittle those who choose to believe in a higher power, and I think it's very disrespectful.

Catholics believe in one god. If you're going to ridicule a religion, at least get your facts straight. People will take you more seriously. |

Christians worship three gods. They just pretend that all three are really one, like the Decepticon Astrotrain. Really one is the Hebrew god of war, one is a guy who lived and died 2000 years ago, and one is, well, I don't know what it is.
Catholics worship a considerably larger amount of beings. They seem to worship the Virgin Mary, the Pope, and a virtually limitless number of patron saints which is very similar to the Shinto and ancient Native religions that believed there were spirits in everything.
Just because these religious people claim that these are all one god, doesn't make it so.
When God said "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," it wasn't talking about later including Saint Nicholas or the Patron Saint of Beekeeping or even Darth Sidious. |

Just like how you pretend to understand the doctorine of the trinity? I see.

As a Catholic, please allow me to correct you. Catholics are taught to worship God alone. The other people you mention are venerated, which means to treat with respect and/or reverence. Please do not spread misinformation about my faith. |

I understand perfectly. The Israelites used to worship a pantheon of gods, then they chose one and killed off the rest, then one of them said he was the son of god, and then a few centuries later some new religious people decided that one god really wasn't enough, so they combined those two and made up a third character.

I was under the impression that Catholics often pray to patron saints. |

This is true. When you see a Catholic praying to Mary or a patron saint, they are praying for the saint's intercession. Basically, they're asking (through prayer, the only way you can communicate with someone in Heaven) for the saint to pray for them. It's all part of the doctorine of The Communion of Saints, which I could try to explain in my own words but I'll just copy and paste from Wikipedia because the definition there is better than one I could come up with.
---
In Catholic terminology, the Communion of Saints is thus said to comprise the Church Militant (those alive on earth), the Church Penitent (those undergoing purification in Purgatory in preparation for heaven), and the Church Triumphant (those already in heaven). The damned are not among the Communion of Saints. The Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox Church as well as the Anglican Church and the Assyrian Church of the East point to this doctrine in support of their practice of asking the intercession of the saints in heaven, whose prayers (cf. Revelation 5 : 8 ) are seen as helping their fellow Christians on earth. These same churches refer to this doctrine in support of the practice of praying for the dead.
---
Of course, if you think all that is a load of crap, that's fine. But please attack my faith by spreading misinformation about what the Catholic church actually teaches.
EDIT: Wow, heckuva typo, huh? I meant to type "Please don't attack my faith..." Sorry about that |
